Series: Yuugiou: Duel Monsters
Name: Ryou Bakura
Age: 16
Gender: Male

Appearance: Among the Yuugiou cast there are distinctive traits for each character that sets them apart. For Ryou, one of these traits is his girlish appearance. Though definitely male, Ryou's features can resemble that of a girl's, with long white hair that often drapes in his large brown eyes, and a very soft facial structure. His body is not that of a woman's however, since he is rather tall and a bit lanky. Ryou tends to hide his thin frame (and what he would feel as weakness) beneath large sweaters and big shirts.

Basic features aside, Ryou has a few other distinguishing features including a long scar on his upper left arm, and a series of odd shaped scars on his chest, as if something with many spikes had dug into his skin. Generally the scar on his chest is hidden, but in times of stress or distraught, Ryou will grasp the front of his shirt, as if feeling the pain of the original wound.

Abilities: Primarily, any magic that Ryou would be able to access would come from the magical item he wears at all times. This item is one of seven mystical items that hold the power of the Shadow Games (a dark magic that allows the wearer to control the Shadow Realm and subsequently any monsters that dwell there). Ryou's item is called the Millennium Ring, and has the ability to remove souls from people's bodies and place them in other items. It also has the ability to erase memories and locate anything the wearer would require. Despite these amazing powers, Ryou does not have a firm grasp of the power of his item. It is the dark spirit in his soul that has the most control over the item. Still, with training, it is not hard to assume that Ryou could eventually come to understand the power of the Ring and be able to use it.

Besides the basic powers of the Ring, the item allows Ryou to call for what are called "Duel Monsters." These monsters live within the Shadow Realm and are often represented in the real world as cards from the popular game of the same name. Ryou has a full deck that allows him to "duel" other characters, though we do not see him duel. Assuming that he is a strong duelist (his deck is very strong, after all, when we see it in action), it is possible that he can use this strength to fight against others, much like the characters Yuugi and Kaiba have done.

The power of his item aside, Ryou's kind nature would be best suited for giving aid to others, possibly in the area of healing or medicine.

Also, given that the spirit is known as the Thief King, Ryou has unwittingly been trained in the ability to dodge attacks and to quickly maneuver around areas without being noticed. He has developed a keen sense of sight and strength, despite his thin frame, allowing him to be very wary of his surroundings and able to quickly avoid confrontation if needed.

Despite these strengths, many fans of the Yuugiou universe believe that Ryou is one of the weakest members of the cast. This is because Ryou tends to be forced to the side by his dark spirit, not having the chance to fight back. This, in a way, is true. If forced into a situation that he could not defeat, Ryou tends to let whatever will happen occur. This can be a great weakness on his part, because since he is not totally trained in his own defensive magic.

Ryou's pessimism can also be considered a weakness, since it can hold him back from fighting. With encouragement and guidance, he could probably grow and overcome his pessimism, but will still struggle with it from time to time.

Personality: Due to the many hardships Ryou has had to face in his life, Ryou tends to remain quiet and likes to stay out of the public eye. Though a staunch defender of what is true and right, Ryou will not step forward into a confrontation unless absolutely necessary. He is also, surprisingly, one of the more pessimistic members of the Yuugiou cast, aside from Kaiba. Despite this, Ryou is very polite and soft spoken. He uses suffixes for everyone he knows, even the dark spirit that inhabits his soul.

This dark spirit is one of the main reasons Ryou tends to stay away from his friends. Though Ryou is a good person, often fighting on the side of the main characters, the dark spirit that inhabits his soul is very evil. Not being one to hurt his friends, Ryou chooses to distance himself from them, hoping that that distance will protect them.

History: Though not considered a main character of the Yuugiou series, it is important to note that Ryou plays a very important role. When he was young, his father gave him the Millennium Ring, which the man had purchased while in Egypt. It is the spirit in the ring that becomes the most important evil villain of the series, making Ryou the vessel for that spirit.

Because of the spirit's control over Ryou, we first see him clash with the people that would soon become his friends. Early on in the series, the spirit takes over Ryou's body and duels Yuugi Mouto, the main character. The spirit is quickly defeated, but still remains bound to Ryou, without the latter's knowledge. Despite the duel, Ryou soon latches on to Yuugi's group of friends and is welcomed in.

Later, the spirit makes other appearances, including one moment when the spirit seals a pact with another villain by slicing Ryou's arm with a knife. It is this action that leaves the scar on Ryou's arm.

Eventually, the fight between Ryou's dark spirit and Yuugi culminates to a final point that destroys the spirit once and for all. But at the point which Ryou is pulled from, this has not happened yet, leaving Ryou with the impression that he is still possessed of the Thief King, though the Thief has been pulled from his soul.
