We flooded again. A relatively minor flood, this time, despite horrific rain--just parts of two rooms!--so I am trying to think of it as "Wow! That really expensive anti-flood work we had done has saved us a lot of trouble!" rather than "For fuck's sake, can we do anything to solve this? Ever ( Read more... )

I'm sorry, and I'm glad it wasn't worse.

Thank you. We are all trying to find some joy in how minor the flood was, this time.

You know... with all the talk about the flooding, I am starting to get kind of curious about the layout of the ground around your house. Would you be willing to post a few photos? I've never heard of a house having this much trouble.

Oh, the layout around the house is terrible. That's why we spent a large sum of money to have people put in a retaining wall, level the ground, add more gutters, and redirect two gutter drainpipes, this summer; the ground/drainpipe/yard-next-door situation was a horrible assembly of "Was someone trying to cause floods?" once we looked at it closely. Unfortunately, we still have two inconveniently placed trees right in the area that needs to drain, framed by the giant cement circular driveway in the front, and the property line with the neighbors on the side. Which is why we're looking to have those removed so that we can run a proper drainage ditch through there.

But honestly, having gotten somewhere between 6 and 9 inches of rain in about a five hour period... I think we need to be grateful we put in so many mitigation factors already, or we probably would've had a whole-house flood instead of a part-of-two-rooms one.

Looking at the rainfall from the morning that produced that tiny flood (5.5 to 9.5 inches, in various places near us), I am finding some grim optimism in the fact that we flooded so little this time.

I'm so sorry you had any flooding at all, but I'm glad it wasn't worse. I hope removing those trees does the (rest of the) job.
