People tend to selectively hear what they only feel will enhance their lives, not what they know will give them a reason to shift their views on matters that eventually make life interesting and difficult. This is very true of the character Theotormon from Blake's Visions of the Daughters of Albion. Theotormon chose not not hear Oothoon's cries and chose to hide under the morality of the society in which he lived. This got me thinking, once again, of how we selectively hear our lovers and our fellow humans' cries for help or love. We only choose to hear the good news, not the bad.
HEAR
Music fills the night
consumed by the whisper
of promises
unheard
from you.
The peal of bells
ring in my
mind of the death
and destruction
of a life
of song
without melody.
Symphonies of dreams and
nightmares
riddle the harmony
of tunes
unsung and unheard
before you.
Chorus of angels
ring crystal
tears
down
the tunnels
to the drumming
of my heart.
