It's a shame your friends weren't more supportive. That must have hurt after you went to such length to support them. I feel like I need to apologize for the rest of us who involve themselves in organized religion - we aren't all like that! But then again I'm from an entirely different religion and not all that organized bout my practice of it. ;-)

I know that not everyone is like that. I know a lot of people that aren't like that at all, for which I'm grateful for.
As for the car story, I'm sure I'll get the chance to tell it at some point. At least, I hope I do.

I've realized more and more that, to some extent, some people like you only to the point that you are like them. If you aren't, they aren't interested.
It's very sobering but, at the same time, it motivates me to be a more authentic person and to (to some extent) not take rejection as personally. If someone rejects me because I'm not "part of their group" then I'm not sure I wanted their friendship after all.
I hope you have found true friends in your adult years! I wish you all the best in your life journey.
