Whispers of an extensive winter storm floated through the air. Though no one truly believed it would be anything quite as immense as the forecasters were saying. The accumulation totals were nothing more than a couple of inches. The prediction for Wednesday was close to seven to eight inches of white powder covering the Washington landscape ( Read more... )

We don't have the kinds of cold you guys get, but I remember the power going out when my son was only 3 days old, and it was nighttime... no power = no fans, and at 9pm it was still 32C (90F). I knew I couldn't keep this newborn cool enough in our hot little house, so I rang my sister and emigrated there for the night (they had power, and airconditioning)! We rely so much on modern conveniences like power and hot and cold running water, don't we? Makes me wonder how we'd cope if we just didn't have these anymore.

I really got the sense of darkness, and the underlying fear of how things would turn out, from this. Very evocative.

I think some people would cope better than others.

I'm not originally from Washington, so I'm use to the power going out in the spring or summer during thunderstorms. Plus, those power outages were pretty localized too. I have never seen a WHOLE city (84,000 people or more) without power. It was creepy.

The thing that really started to bug me after awhile is that businesses and homes are extremely vulnerable to criminals when the power is out. Criminals could have easily taken advantage of it. Though, thankfully, I haven't heard any stories of that happening.

Thank you. I wasn't sure I was describing the creepy and dark feeling very well or not.

Very accurate description of winter storms! Enjoyed.
I saw on the weather report that the northwest was 'in for it.'
We had a similar storm here in the northeast last week.
The winds make it so cold. We didn't lose power this time though. Today is just light snow so I think we'll be okay for now. It is always so good to see a sunny day again!

The Northwest just isn't really capable of handling a whole lot of snow unless it is eastern Washington. Western Washington has steep hills all over the place, especially Seattle. Road crews can sand and salt those hills all they want, but cars and trucks are not going up or down those hills until the snow is gone.

Normally, I'm one to love the snow. Though, I didn't expect the power to go out. I certainly didn't expect to see the whole city out of power either. Something about it was so very creepy to me.

Oh yes. I understand. We have a generator here so if we lose power for any more than a couple hours, Grampy turns it on for the necessities like lights and the freezer.
