SHIT! If I had seen this post earlier I would have told you exactly how we do it at the library.

I've got four sections arranged in different ways.

1) Japanese manga is arranged alpha by title and then by volume number. (bleach 1, 2, 3...)
2) Super hero titles are arranged by the team, then spinoffs, then volume number or alpha by title.
(Avengers 1, 2, 3; New Avengers, 1, 2, 3; Batman...)
3) Comic Strips are arranged by the original title of the strip then alpha by title of book.
(Boondocks Fresh for 01, Boondocks Right to be hostile, Garfield...)
4) Graphic Novels and Indie stuff, Alpha by author.

This is the typical arrangement in comic shops and it's what libraries are moving toward doing. I've been encouraging it at my library and it may spread through the whole system that way.

It's nice to know, but the alpha by author decision was made without my input anyway. Mostly I enjoy being a largely autonomous drone, but sometimes it's frustrating.

We do our Japanese manga (and similar-sized things that we have more than one of, like Marvel's Runaways) the same way. Comic strips are in a separate humor section outside the teen room, which is also alpha by author (and also a mess).

Yeah, that became extra clear as I did the actual organization today. Fortunately, I'd say only about a third of our non-manga collection is supers, so maybe it won't be too too bad.
