All my answers for this would be skewed by the fact that I used to live in Socorro and regularly drive 70+ miles (over an hour) to see friends in Albuquerque. :P
You know, I am finding that is the case with some responses on FacceBook too...
I also have that bias as I used to live an hour and fifteen minutes away from friends and would sometimes drive it every day even during the school week. I just don't want to live so far away that no one comes to see us. =(
I'm going to throw in my own experiences living in the area you are looking...
Distance doesn't seem to be an issue for the annual type parties. This year was the second New Years here, and it was once again attended well enough for me to be happy with it. I intend on doing New Years every year.
Weekly/monthly visits don't seem to be an issue either, as the location is beautiful enough to make the drive wonderful. The only people who I have come across that don't want to make the drive are generally the ones who live in Aurora.
Oh... and if you did live up here, you'd have the "bonus" of friends within walking distance, so the "drop in" factor would increase.
Weekly vs. monthly makes a big difference to me, which is why I said "other" on #2, and for something that's only once a year I would be willing to drive more than an hour, which is why I said "more" on #3

I would take an extra day or two on a trip to a location hours away to spend with friends. (And I have done that before.)

I really would like to have people up for fiber guild say once a quarter or so... maybe it is not unreasonable at a 40 minute drive...
Thanks for your thoughts. =)
