And that's...it? You leave me with tears in my eyes and a pit in my stomach and I don't ever know what happens to Sam?

It would be horrible if Sam went back to heaven...but at least there would be closure...to leave me like this is just cruel!

Hell of a compelling story, though

The ending is probably more symbolic than overt. The intention was to mirror the end of Epiphany, except instead of Dean being left with falling snow and Sam's empty footprints in a field, he gets falling snow and Sam physically reaching out to him. Sam chooses Dean.

The untold ending is that Sam goes back to Heaven, brokers a deal to be on-call with Heaven's battles, and slowly begins to ease out of his soldier mentality and become his human self again. His stretches at home get longer and longer until it's only once in a blue moon that Heaven sends an angel to ask him to fight in a skirmish. It's enough to satisfy the side of Sam that does want to be on the frontline of Heaven's war. But most of the time, he gets to be one half of Sam-and-Dean. And that's just fine by him.

Hope that lessens the cruelty! :3

Oh, thank you for giving me that peace of mind! Honestly, I was having trouble going to sleep because I was feeling so awful for Dean losing Sam again...which clearly means your story sucked me into it completely! (And if you ever do write the last part, I will read it in a flash!)
