It's bloody well COOL. I had NO idea what the noise was at first, other than "that plane is REALLY LOW." So I stepped out on the balcony to see, and there's a bunch of planes flying in formation on the other side of the canal. So I came in here and typed the start of the post, then I heard them coming again, and they flew almost straight overhead... Then they went straight up Metcalfe (with traffic, even!) and I think that was the coolest part. The people across the way had their fingers in their ears, which amused me :P
*laughs* Why doesn't it surprise me that you said "hot pilots" :P
I spent six out of eight weeks at my ex-girlfriend's place a while back, and she was right on the approach/departure path for the Patuxent River Navy base in Maryland. I got very used to low flying fighters very quickly, though they were generally nice enough to not fly much at night. The same can't be said for commercial flightpaths... Ugh. That's one thing I don't miss about where I used to live.
I heard it too! Good to know what it was. I was watching a conspiracy theory 9-11 movie at the time, so of course my reaction was to duck and become concerned... haha.
That was, oddly enough, my second instinct when I first heard the sound, but my "what the hell IS that?" instinct overrode the self-preservation instinct :P
