In the past few months I have started giving inexpensive surprise gifts. If I see something I know someone will really like, I get it and give it to them. There's no occasion, I just think they would like it. :) It's a lot of fun, actually, and gives the recipient a nice surprise. I don't know if it would work with more expensive gifts, but

I love giving gifts like that. Though sometimes, I'll save it for their birthday if I know it'd make a bigger impression. Like I bought my brother a drinking flask for his 21st birthday 2 years in advance (I got this discount deal from a company). When I told him about it, he was quite impressed.
