I did it! I just passed my quals with flying colours! :) Quals (qualifying exam) is the point at which you typically switch over from classwork to full-time research. It's also the point at which your committee approves your thesis project. You get two tries to pass, and if you don't, you're out. Most advisers don't let students take them

Thanks! I think it's much better than the "oral exam on any topic in all your field" type quals! It really helped me focus and sort out what my thesis project will actually be about. And do a lot of the literature review I needed to do.
