Playing with Fire by
Gena Showalter My rating:
4 of 5 starsI picked this up at a library book sale for ten cents. I enjoyed her 'Lords of the Underworld' series, and thought that I would give this one a try as well.
It was well worth the ten cents, and I will be digging up the rest of the series in one way or another.
Belle went from Miss Dependable to unable to hold down a job for more than a couple weeks--some she can't even make it through her first day. All this changes with some frazzled scientist guy runs into the coffee shop where she works and slips quite the mickey into her sugary coffee drink. (What results was not the relaxing break she expected.)
She wakes up to find herself back in her apartment with some strange (yet sexy) guy who keeps talking about neutralizing her. Oh, and things catch on fire when she gets angry (among other odd occurrences).
Definitely the enjoyable (and sexy) read I have come to expect from Gena Showalter. :)

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by
Seth Grahame-Smith My rating:
4 of 5 starsI was expecting something similar to Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, but what I got was more biography and less fiction. Not quite what was expected, but delightful nonetheless.
It was everything you would expect to see in a traditional biography: quotes from other sources (letters/books/etc), pictures, and a very detailed account of the life and times of the subject.
All of this doctored to show the evidence of the hand vampires played in the early days of our country and in the life of Abraham Lincoln. It is framed in with a bit of fiction wherein the author receives Lincoln's diaries from a vampire who was an associate of Lincoln's. (And whose origin story is epically amazing in its own right.) All of the historical occurrences that are included add to the validity of the author's claims of vampires.
Carefully researched, cleverly written, and a clear labor of love.

The Trouble With Magic by
Madelyn Alt My rating:
4 of 5 starsI want to say that Ryann was the one who first mentioned this book and got it on my radar, so a 'thank you' is in order. A fun read with a mystery that kept me curiously guessing until the reveal.
This was among my Uncle's books, and I remembered it from Ryann talking about it so I grabbed it to read. I'm glad that the second book was tucked in the piles as well, because this was quite enjoyable.
I like how the author doesn't just have Maggie automatically accept the supernatural revelation. That seems to happen all too often in this sort of book. I also liked how it was more about the mystery than it was about her boss (and her boss' friends) being witches or gifted in some fashion.
There was also a small thread of the romance genre peeking its head in the door, so I am interested to watch that play out (or not) over the next few books. I'll have to search out the others via Kindle.
