IMPORTANT POLL

Is it possible to be smothered by something that is also capable of piercing?
i.e. needles, forks, knife-like knifes?

My lovely roommate and I are at an impasse, and she's bringing Helen into this, and I say NUUU-uh. Helen isn't biased like that.

What's your opinion?
[on smothered and pierced, not on Helen's involvement...]

no. I don't think that's possible.

suffocation requires the blocking of all airways or sources of oxygen.
my only guess is that you could, with a thick enough knife (ie, butcher), stab someone in the throat, from the side, without cutting the spinal cord, and as the blood pours out around the knife, it could form a seal around the blade and cut off enough oxygen to suffocate you.

only thing that is debatable is what actually kills you first: the blood loss, shock, or the loss of air?

you've given this quite a lot of thought, nuke...
but is smothering necessarily suffocation?

if the question is:
"can you smother someone temporarily with a pointy object, and then, after a few moment, release them, and allow them to continue breathing normally?"....then i would say probably not....
If so, i'd like to hear a plausible explanation as to how this can be accomplished....preferably in PowerPoint.

Temporary isn't a necessary componant of this, but if you ever do find that PP, I'll pay you in honey-n-nutri. yeast crusted toast and coffee.
