I would also like to add on the technical side, that Multiverse, in addition to being the name of the company, is the name of their engine. The demo trailers shown on the website are done by amateurs using their engine, similar to game made with the Torque engine from Garage Games, for example, and that engine is being used to make things like Marble Blast Ultra or Penny Arcade: On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode One. Given a strong enough team with a big enough budget, you can probably make this engine sing.

I think that they will if they expect to retain a customer base. This is not a subject that is easily "mainstreamed", which means that they will be pretty much riding on a hardcore niche market for profitability. If they expect to snare that market, then they have to appear to that very exacting niche.

Consider that the Multiverse engine is completely free to develop for, the company does not have to pay one cent toward engine costs. It will have to pay a percentage of its subscriber income, yes, but there will be little money spent developing an engine. This frees the development team of focus their budget on content creation. Things like art, writing, and design.

And yes, I concede that they may screw it up, but if they do then no one will pay for it and it will fold and be remembered as another stupid mistake made by executives regarding this franchise.
