About 50% of the time I log into this site now, I get a pop-up ad that covers the whole page and autoplays a stupid Best Buy Christmas ad, complete with stupid music. This may be enough for me to stop using this site entirely. I'm still considering my options.

meta, announcements, bad things

That happened to me, too and I had a very strong reaction that it should stop happening. The way I saw it, I could either boycott the site or find the $20/year to make the ads go away. I chose to reward a bad user experence with money, but I don't like it. On the other hand, I've been using this thing fo free for years and I know they're hurting for money. It's hard to blame them for moving to more extreme advertising. *Shrug*

In the eight years I've been using lj, I haven't seen a single ad.

Maybe you guys should install noscript?

If I'm seeing the ads, then my parents certainly will. It's unacceptable to me for my parents to come to read my journal and find an ad for Best Buy in its place. Seriously. Neither of them uses Firefox, adblock, and/or noscript as far as I can tell. I generally don't use many addons because I haven't had my own working computer[1] in so long that I'm generally borrowing or using public computers.

[1] I have two laptops, neither of which works terribly well. The PC overheats and shuts down regularly, as well as being nearly incapable of flash. The linux computer has decade-old hardward and next to no software support and cannot run more than two programs at once, in addition to having no flash support.

Ah, I hadn't thought about parents. For me, lj's always been a place for keeping in touch with other young, tech-savvy friends.

What about those less socially-oriented, straight-up blog sites, like wordpress or whatnot? Do they have (many) ads?
