No, this is not an episode review...

I can't lie: I love the new Doctor Who. I love it a lot. I love it more than can be expressed aptly in simple words and phrases. Even in the episodes that aren't great -- and, heck, even in the episodes in which I can personally point out major flaws -- I'm having a ton of fun and watching them with a big smile. And this isn't to say that I dislike ( Read more... )

Hey now, television is SRS BSNS.

And actually, I agree that fictions and fantasies are (or at least can be) pretty serious business. We read, we enjoy, we live in favorite little fantasy worlds. Which, I suspect, is what results in people getting a bit RAWR when their personal interpretation of things clashes with yours -- we keep our favorite stories very close to our hearts.

And it's sad, really terribly sad, how easily that passion can turn to anger and unpleasantness.

Fantasy worlds are the only worlds worth living in, really.

I FEEL THIS WAY ABOUT EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME. I've never been in "fandom" before because I seriously just cannot stand to pick something apart to the extent that the internet seems to enjoy. And with friends irl, after watching something, once the conversation starts heading that way I space right the hell out. It's one thing to enjoy something and discuss elements you like and dislike but the kind of exhaustive cataloguing and detailing I see going on...I mean ok, we all joke and whatnot about me being chaotic and disjointend and blah but I am not even joking, that kind of thing fills me with horror.

Of course now I'm terrified people who have posted reviews that we know will read this comment and think I hate them THAT'S NOT TRUE. It's just...directed at fandom as a whole enterprise. Stop looking behind the curtain goddammit. That is NOT what I am here for.

Haha. Oh, I look behind the curtain and develop my own crazy fan theories (like that one line in Zagreus that makes me think Charley is a Time Lord)... but I'm not going to argue the truth of crazy fan theories against your crazy fan theories. I mean, they're all crazy fan theories. I mean, honestly, you like the crazy stuff you like, I like the crazy stuff I like, and if they aren't exactly the same, then so what. Neither of our opinions are any the less valid for it.

But looking behind the curtain is only fun for as long as it's fun. When people get all argumentative, the fun dies. Why do so many people on the internet feel the need to kill fun? D:

Ah! Another devotee of my crazy internet theory?

"Ah, doctor! She won't eat her carrots, you know! I keep telling her. And lettuce, and bran, and she keeps looking at fobwatches in shop windows..."

Charley's mother says this near the beginning of the story. And mainly, as an idea, I think it's just sort of ridiculous and fun.
