I can't lie: I love the new Doctor Who. I love it a lot. I love it more than can be expressed aptly in simple words and phrases. And actually, I agree that fictions and fantasies are (or at least can be) pretty serious business. We read, we enjoy, we live in favorite little fantasy worlds. Which, I suspect, is what results in people getting a bit RAWR when their personal interpretation of things clashes with yours -- we keep our favorite stories very close to our hearts.
And it's sad, really terribly sad, how easily that passion can turn to anger and unpleasantness.

Of course now I'm terrified people who have posted reviews that we know will read this comment and think I hate them THAT'S NOT TRUE. It's just...directed at fandom as a whole enterprise. Stop looking behind the curtain goddammit. That is NOT what I am here for.

Charley's mother says this near the beginning of the story. And mainly, as an idea, I think it's just sort of ridiculous and fun.
