It's not that it matters, I was stating from where I get my perception, but feel free not to believe me, or something.
I really think most of those are trolls, though I guess we could be getting a higher percentage of 'sj' people in the recent increases to our numbers. As I said above, I don't feel the level of the conversation hasn't suffered, though.

Forgot to add something I thought may be reality: since the start there has been people critiquing other people for being 'too sj', and new and stuff. I think it's certainly possible that more of us are only now getting comfortable to actually voice the views we've always had. I certainly didn't post during the first posts I read over here, and I posted first about other non-failfandom-related things*. It was a long-ish time until I started to participate in these discussions, and even then I took especial care to only argue parts I was particularly confident about (like my perspective as Argentinian).

DA Why? I think we have like one or two anons who get snotty if people say they've been here since the start, but, you know, some people have been, and they are allowed to say so, if it's relevant. Sorry but.

I'm not saying you don't have the right to feel that way, because obviously you do, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what's embarrassing about it.
(That being said, the time I did mention how long I'd been around, I gave a shout-out to the "hates you saying you've been here from the beginning" anon. It seemed to appease the embarrassment gods.)

Another DA: Yeah. It's not like anon announced it out the blue or anything. If someone calls you a n00b (which is basically what anon they replied to did) and you have been here since Day 1, it is relevant and okay to say so.

I think some of it's that it's so pointless to say you've been here since the first post because there's absolutely no way to check on it, so there's no reason for anyone to believe you - so when I see someone say "I've been here since the first post" instead of "I've been here quite a while" it comes across as very deliberately trying to impress the person questioning them (and I think it's generally a very fair question, because we do have a substantial number of people who haven't been here forever and admit that when they're called on doing something against the current) and make the other anon go, "oh! You've been here longer than me, I'm so sorry." Calling someone a n00b really isn't the nastiest thing here, you don't need to pull what would be a DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?! in the real world.
If people did it with some kind of tongue-in-cheek tone, like, "I know we both know this isn't true, but it's a funny injoke now," it wouldn't bother me so much.

Ah, okay. See, I just take it as another piece of information, and it's definitely not an "I WIN" button.
When it gets brought up it's almost always in response to someone calling them a noob, and I think they can dispute that with the actual, ya know, truth without being chided about it. If I called you shorty and you were 6' tall, I'd think you have the right to mention how tall you are without getting a finger wag.

But they don't have to say "I've been here since the meme started," is the thing. They absolutely can dispute the accusation that they're new, but it's really really not more convincing that way (if anything, it's less). Especially since everyone who does it, it seems like, says they've been here since the first post. It's funny how people who came in on the third or fourth post never seem to be called noobs, huh?

For me the content of the response has a lot to do with whether I find them embarrassing. If the reply had been "No, I've been here since the beginning, blah, blah, earnest blah" it wouldn't stand out. When it's in the form of childish exaggeration, and LOL no, it triple highlights it and I not only find it a bit face-palm worthy, but I also tend to assume it's not true.
It's the embarrassment squick of watching someone obviously trying too hard.

Meme definitely goes in circles, anon. It's been over a year and we've talked over a ton of stuff and we're still getting these influxes of people. Let people work out their stuff and have discussions like you did, you know?

But this isn't a situation where the white straight cis males are fighting for something that only affects white straight cis males. The stuff they're fighting for right now are problems for everyone, not just them. Yeah, it'd be awesome if the WSCM could fight for stuff that hits minority groups only, but...say, getting affordable health care would help everybody, and I'd rather get that first and then fight about how abortions, birth control and hormones/surgery should be included, instead of demanding both right now and getting neither.

Er, if my freudian typo hasn't outed me, nothing will: ^'has suffered'. Damn double negatives.
