Can anybody give me instructions on how to be in fandom these days?

From what I can tell, it seems tumblr is where fandom is at these days. Or some fandoms, anyhow.

I don't know. I'm still ambling along in HL, where change comes slow.

...I don't really understand Tumblr. I mean, I've got one, and I follow some people who post pretty pictures of pretty boys, but I have no idea how to interact on it.

Any particular fandom? Generally, tumblr is for reblogging pretty pictures and memes (but isn't very good for conversation threads), twitter is like a giant public chat room (and you quickly learn to make your point in less than 140 characters), LJ is still good for posting fic and kink memes and such, AO3 is becoming the central area for fic. But, for example, I think a lot of Merlin fic are still posted on LJ, whereas Sherlock and X-Men First Class tend to be on AO3. It really depends on what you want to do.

I'd recommend either reconnecting with old friends first and seeing where they tend to 'hang out', or pick a fandom and see where most of the activity is taking place.

I just really miss making new friends and interacting with people who get excited over the same things that you do. I still read a ton of fic, and look at the pretty graphics (which is a fantastic use of tumblr).

I remember getting into Highlander, and I guess it was still kinda new, and there weren't a lot of people yet, so I guess I felt less intimated by it. And with HP, I just joined some RPGs, and made lots of friends there...

There's just so MUCH out there now, it makes me feel old and out of touch, lol.

I guess at some point life happens, and just like any thing else, our attention wanes. For the last couple of years, I was just so busy and tired after work, and didn't want to think or have to be responsible for anything. In a way, staying in touch with fandom is kinda like work... you need to interact or create something to stay relevant, and though I (mostly) love my job, it's exhausting.

Now though, I miss the 'eeeee' feeling of excitement when you fangirl over something with like minded people. Really, none of my everyday friends really get that.
