[Background]

[ note: As Clovis is only present for three episodes and one sound stage, this is mostly headcanon brought on by what other characters have said about him and what Bartley knows. Bartley worked directly under Clovis on Code-R; it seemed odd given how close the two were that any secrets would be kept between them. Evident in how Bartley seems to be unable to keep his mouth shut around Imperial Family.

Furthermore, the manga-version of Clovis is mentioned as his personality and role in canon does not fluctuate save for The Nightmare of Nunnally, which will not be mentioned. ]

Fifth born to Charles zi Britannia, it would seem like out of all of the Imperial Family that Clovis lived the most sheltered life. Evidence of such is derived from the fact that almost everyone else of the family was able to notice that something was at least somewhat wrong with the way that Britannia was run while Clovis always advocated the manner in which it was. During his childhood, it seemed like he did not have any friends outside of the Imperial Family save one. It was listed in supplementary works that Bartley Asprius actually was Clovis's caretaker whilst he was a child. The two would play chess and Clovis would be praised for his skills.

Really, it seemed like Clovis did not learn anything that he was "supposed" to learn. He went to watch the demonstration of the new weapon of the Empire - the Knightmare Frame - by Empress Marianne. What he took from it was that she was beyond skilled and worthy of being the Emperor's Knight and wife. He looked up to her about as much as anyone else did, but naturally, preferred his own mother in the end. Still, he never took up learning how one should pilot a Knightmare Frame, which was something that even Euphemia knew how to do. Still no one ever really pressured him to learn other than Cornelia, which he constantly brushed off as her being overtly protective of him. But then, he seemed to be fairly flippant with most of the people who knew him personally. Honestly, the only people that he seems to have shown any sort of respect and reverence toward were Schneizel and the Emperor.

Returning to his childhood, most of his time was listed in being over at Aries Villa and challenging Lelouch to chess matches and losing horribly. Yet still he considered himself to be his little brother's rival and had very fond memories of all the time that they spent together. As such, news of Empress Marianne's death had come to more than a surprise. He did not want to know anything that had happened and left the investigation solely in the hands of Schneizel and Cornelia. To think that anyone would want her to die, it just was too horrible for him to imagine. And so, he focused his time trying to figure out how to console Lelouch and Nunnally over what had occurred.

That was how he came to be with Lelouch when the Emperor called him to eventually banish him to Area 11. Clovis had come to the villa to play a game of chess with his little brother with the hope that it would raise his spirits. It almost seemed as though he would win, but the match ended up being interrupted. He did not know what was said between the two, and only knew that his little brother and sister were being sent to then Japan. It was his belief that one day their father would come to retrieve them from that land, and there was hardly ever the thought of war with the country on his mind. Yet war did come and news of his siblings' death reached Pendragon. Clovis was devastated and blamed the Elevens for what had happened - breeding a hatred for them for not protecting that which he deemed most important.

Four years past uneventfully, Clovis devoted that time to the arts and perfecting his craft. He did not seem to care much about how Britannia was run and wanted very little to do with assignments related to dominating or commanding Areas. But if one were fair, no one of the Empire asked him to do much of anything. It was known in the Imperial Family that he was just simply too soft and gentle to be willing or able to do what was needed as a leader. However, when conflict broke out in Area 11, Clovis came to a decision what it was that he should do. He had been thinking for such a long time on what it was that he should do in order to honor his little brother and sister, and now he knew.

Without telling anyone, he sent a formal request to be allowed to be Viceroy of Area 11. The last match that he had with Lelouch, he felt that it was a problem that he had to solve for his little brother. It was approved and he waited until his elder siblings returned to tell them of what he planned to do. Clovis did not know when he would be able to see them all again and so it seemed like he went to each and every one to wish them farewell before leaving. But it was Cornelia and Schneizel that he saved for last. It seemed like he somewhat dreaded what their reactions would be and steeled himself accordingly. Cornelia, he was certain, would be against it whilst he could never predict what it was that Schneizel would do. In the end, he hoped that they would support his decision, but still would carry it out regardless of what it was that they said.

During the confrontation, seemingly the closest he had ever had with his siblings, it was one of the rare times that he spoke in a final manner with them. This was how things were going to be, because he wanted to be a good big brother to Lelouch and Nunnally. As much as he ever would to his family, Clovis actually snapped at Cornelia for her light comment of how it was rare for him to think so seriously on something, which brought pause to seemingly both Cornelia and Schneizel.

That was when Euphemia interrupted with news that Lelouch had sent her a letter stating that he had made a friend with an Eleven. News that he had not been privy to until that moment. He could not leave it in just anyone's hands and he wanted to be able to say that he did something for them. It was about this time that he decided to stop relying on others and rely wholly on himself. Their advice on how he should do things went in one ear and out the other - even Schneizel's - because this was something that he had to do on his own.

Not once in all the time that he was Viceroy did he ask for their assistance on matters, but that did not stop him from sending gifts to his family. It was stated as something that he loved to do - perhaps, to show that he was doing fine where he was, and helped with how much that he missed them. Letters were sent most often to Euphemia out of his siblings. Really, it did not appear like he wanted to be separated from them at all; he did not really enjoy being a Viceroy and not as glamorous a job as he had thought. But again, it was not for himself that he was doing anything. He had promised that he would ensure that Area 11 would be quiet for Lelouch and Nunnally. So, that they could rest easy with little disturbances. He designed many architectural wonders in order to make the Area more like Pendragon. The Viceroy garden was even designed to look exactly like Aries Villa's.

Most likely, it was during those three years as Viceroy that he became involved in the Geass Order and knowing vaguely what Geass was. Clovis simply seemed like the best candidate for Charles to work through whilst he hid himself away doing his own research. Loyal to Britannia and family, rarely questioned that which went on around him, naïve and idealistic when it came to those that he loved. But, it was doubtful that he knew much of anything save the bare minimum.

Bartley did not even realize what it was that the Order was planning until a year after Clovis's death. The most that they understood was that Geass was a terrifying power and the Thought Elevators would be used to help bring the world to peace under Britannian rule. That was all that Clovis needed to know as to what it was that he was doing in the end. Of course, there was the threat of being disinherited should he ever let it be known to his other siblings (or the world) what it was that he knew. It was enough of a threat as stated many times Clovis cared greatly for his family and to think that he would no longer be apart of them would be more than enough reason to keep all information to himself.

It was also during this time that he encountered C.C., whose name he never actually found out and only referred to her as Code-R. Uncertain how he became aware of the fact that she was immortal, but that brought enough pause to him. She was captured and experimented upon soon after said discovery, however. Clovis even created his own research organization, Rosenberg Institute, which was headed by Bartley. Yes, indeed, he promoted his caretaker to general and the two of them worked to discover the make up of C.C.'s biology - to see if it would be possible to grant that same immortality to others - and designed the Knight Giga Fortress Siegfried. Everything was going to be presented to the Emperor when he was finished. The hope seemed to be that the information could be used to ensure immortality to the Imperial Family. Having lost Lelouch and Nunnally, he hated the thought of potentially losing anyone else.

Beyond the experiments that he was running and excavating of a Thought Elevator on Kamine Island, he designed many clothing lines, painted over thirty paintings, implemented an art appreciation week (all classes save those related to art were canceled), created an amusement park, designed a pool, designed a casino, and generally seemingly kept himself almost obnoxiously busy. Yet even so, given all that he was doing, it did not seem like he was actually running Area 11 beyond asking the terrorists to stop fighting against Britannia and let his subordinates handle everything else. This lackadaisical attitude changed when C.C. was taken by said terrorists. They did not know what it was that they had, but regardless, he could not let the witch's existence be known.

Clovis did not react to the knowledge well - disrupting his own party to send out every force available to deal with the potential threat. Things obviously did not go as planned as C.C. contracted with Lelouch and began the events that would lead to his eventual death. When she was not located in a reasonable amount of time, it forced him to order the entire destruction of Shinjuku Ghetto. He planned to lie about the reason to the public on the matter when he was successful, but everything changed once Lelouch was able to contact the terrorists Clovis was fighting. Boombastic battle happened where all of the prince's Knightmare Frames on the field were lost.

As stated before, Clovis did not learn anything that he should have learned. He broke formation of all the troops in order to send them to one area, even those that were guarding the command center where he was. When everyone was lost, he was once more forced to make a difficult decision. He accepted the help of Lloyd Asplund - and consequentially, Suzaku Kururgi's, though he did not realize it at the time - to save him from the blunder that he had placed himself in. Lancelot proved to be more than a worthy adversary for the terrorists, and those few resources that he had left were closing in on the rest. All of them would have been wiped out had not Lelouch been able to slip into the control room with the use of Geass.

The two brothers after seven years had their own confrontation where Clovis called his troops off and ordered aid to be given to everyone in Shinjuku Ghetto - regardless if they were Britannian or Eleven. He put on the appearance of being bored and nonchalant about being held hostage (and possibly executed later). It was only when Lelouch started to mention Aries Villa did he actually show any other emotion, becoming immediately furious with the other. It was only when Lelouch removed his helmet and stepped close enough in the dim lights did Clovis instantly recognize who he was. Did so even before his little brother introduced himself.

It was immediately afterward that he was elated that Lelouch was alive, stating as much to him. He said that they can instantly move to return to Pendragon. This returned once more to the statement that he really was very sheltered and understanding little of the gravity of any situation - he was seemingly forgetting he fact that a) his brother was currently holding a gun on him, b) had been indirectly involved in the murder many a Britannian soldier, and c) was helping a terrorist organization. It was when Lelouch brought a bit of the reality of the situation to Clovis did fear start to set in on the prince. He did not understand what it was that was being said to him - the accusation that he had any part of murdering Empress Marianne, of doing anything that would hurt his little brother and sister.

Hysterically, he began to claim his innocence on the matter. It was only when he was Geassed and accidentally held Schneizel and Cornelia responsible in the murder of his mother with some fantastically fail wording did Lelouch believe that Clovis had nothing to do with it. Once free of the Geass, he returned to his hysterics on the matter until he was reassured. He actually had a moment of relief that his little brother had come to his senses until once more the gun was set upon him. Clovis tried desperately to once more implore Lelouch to remember how close that they were as children, that they were still brothers, but it did little to save his life in the end.

[Personality]

Clovis was actually quite a private and surprisingly reserved individual, barely showing any of his real emotions to anyone. He really did not even like to swear, not wanting to debase himself by using vulgar language. Really, he did not like to give the satisfaction to people of seeing him actually sweat and become panicked. When he heard news of C.C.'s containment being stolen, he coolly formulated a plan in order to retrieve it while hiding any sense of doubt or concern about its capture. The only indication of his alarm was the rather harsh order of killing everyone within the Shinjuku Ghetto in order to hide the existence of C.C. His reservation is further shown during the battle which followed. Even when he began losing to the Black Knights, he kept a relatively calm front within the control room. He was frightened by the tactical ingenuity that the small force had, but still tried to have an appearance of composure (keeping most of his panic internal rather than allowing others to know of it even though it was written all over his face).

He was something of a narcissist, however. He seemingly constantly overestimated just how important he was in the Britannian Empire. There was a sense to his personality that he felt that he could get away with anything with very little repercussion, because of his status. His actions (or rather inactions) within governing Area 11 were enough of a case in point; that he continued to throw parties rather than involve himself with the concerns of society. It can be assumed by the fact of how he acted toward Lelouch before Clovis knew who he was. Before, he behaved in a nonchalant and flippant manner. There was barely concealed rage about having been kidnapped by who he presumed was an Eleven. Clovis also had a sense of calm, which most likely came from the fact that he did not believe that "the terrorist" would be stupid enough to bring harm to him. It also returns to the fact of how Clovis disliked the idea of having people actually get the better of him, on any account.

Stated in the history, while he did not harbor any disapproval toward Empress Marianne, he did harbor quite a bit of negative thoughts toward those of lower ranks than himself. He constructed many buildings and clothing designs for the amusement of society, but they were only accessible to those of higher rank within society (like the Britannians). Clovis was fine with bettering the lives of those that already had better lives, but very little against doing much for those of poorer status. He simply had very little care for them. Their concerns and worries were not those that he could begin to fathom or understand, and he did nothing in order to gain any sort of understanding. Of course, he did not like those that try to look down upon him at all. When one of the party goers subtly mocked Clovis on throwing a party while he was giving a speech to the people, the prince was quick to both dismiss and reprimand what the reporter said about him.

Above all else, Clovis had a great love for his family. While he was not able to see them often because of his occupation (both as a Viceroy and helper to the C.C. project), he still looked fondly upon each and every one of them. This was shown in that he seemingly began painting Lelouch, Nunnally and her shortly after the news hit that the three had died in Area 11. By the time of his death, he had filled an entire manor with paintings of them as his subject material. The manor itself is not made known until well after his death, when a painting gallery is going to be opened in his honor. His family seemed to be welcome to come to stay at the manor at any time that they liked, but it was still a completely private gallery. It was something that he kept private to himself and only let a select few to view it.

[Abilities]

He can paint? No, really. It seems like his only real strength is that he can paint outrageously well. Create masterpieces within days as he was able to paint enough to fill a museum within just three years. That and he had an eye for designing clothing lines and buildings (as mentioned many, many times already). It seemed like he was the one who designed Siegfried, or at least, what it was that he wanted the Knight Giga Fortress should be.

His memory also seemed to be something of top-notch and photogenic in nature as he was able to recreate what Empress Marianne, Lelouch and Nunnally looked like; as well as what Aries Villa's garden's appearance was. He remembered how many loses that he had with Lelouch - thirty-six out of thirty-seven. Still, it would seem like he does not remember matters that are unimportant to him in any way.

Clovis seemed to actually be a fairly good public speaker; he has the sort of confidence of self and his convictions that made him good for such endeavors. But it was noticed that he did copy Schneizel's gestures when he did do said speaking. He did tend to mince words and use a bit of flowery prose, but what speaker does not?

[Affection]

Any affection is fine. He'll respond to it in a political manner -- that is be really flippant and relatively kind about it. Clovis is more open to being nice to his family and will get a little annoyed if the person keeps it up because really, commoners never really seem to know their place.

[Fighting]

It's fine to fight him, but he has no skills to fight and be beaten down so fast. For those looking for a challenge, they will not find one here.

Don't 4th Wall break him, everything else is gravy.
