(‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows’ rant (plus spoilers) below the LJ-cut. )
It could easily have gone awfully wrong. The world had immeasurably high expectations, so the long-awaited ending to the seven-book-epic that is ‘Harry Potter’ could have been an anti-climax without difficulty.
Thankfully, it really wasn’t.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt this emotional while reading a book. My dad actually commented that he’s rarely seen as much emotion reflected on my face than while I was reading this book. Today, while continuing and finishing the story, I had the house to myself. Thankfully, for I’m a bit ashamed to say that I cried buckets, and at times was actually weeping. Harry’s ‘death march’ to the forbidden forest was almost unbearable for me to read (partly because I was sobbing so badly my tearful eyes could hardly make out the words).
And the deaths of Hedwig, Mad-Eye, Dobby, Fred, Lupin and Tonks hit me with the savage intensity I had previously only linked to untimely departures of real-life friends and family. I hadn’t realised how much I had started to care for these beloved characters. I shall miss them deeply, for, to me, they might as well have been real.
Thank heavens for fanfiction-authors, for we don’t need horcruxes or enchanted stones to raise beloved characters from the dead.
Now, let’s all join together, buy some paint, make some ‘HARRY LIVES!’ posters and hang them on public buildings. I’m certain public officials would forgive us in this case.
Also to be mentioned: DRACO LIVES!!!! (Whoop!)
