It was a disaster... both the recital and, apparently, for reasons I don't yet understand (he's not home yet and he certainly wouldn't explain earlier), meeting John's mother.

I am terribly sorry to hear the recital was a disaster. Clearly, you sensed it would go that way beforehand ... but the reality is still quietly stunning.
