You aren't the only one who feels that way about it and I dabble about as often just to reassure myself. Though I'm sure that back in the first year or two of publication it had more oomph.
I must dig out the early editions and see if it was just my impressionable young mind being amazed at a queer magazine with pictures of women in it that wasn't just cheaply photocopied but actually had the odd bit of colour.
I think you might be right...I think the first issue I saw had lots of half naked women wearing Agent Provocoteur undies in it. One could of course have a big discussion about how those pictures differed or not from the sort you might get in FHM et al, but at the time it felt terribly liberated to me! lol.
I bought a copy when Courtney was on the cover (I got some weird looks at the counter that day- I think they thought I was gonna ahem off over it) which, as it turned out one of the film festival issues. All I noticed was that they seemed to have the inability to use the word 'lesbian' or even 'gay [woman]' - not that I have issues with the word dyke in the same league as faggot or C words N word, but you gotta be able to back it up. I couldn't believe it was by the same people who make Gay Times- (not that that is a beacon of all that is right in the world of gay politics (nothing can be right in the world of GAY politics for a start) it seemed more like Attitude with more dildos at the back. It was, all said and done, a very boring read. P.S. the Courtney article went along the lines of Courtney Love is in a film. She plays a dyke and wears a leopard skin ensemble. The film is good. Watch the film. There are dykes in it.
Yes they do seem to have a particular fondness for the word Dyke. The angelina article basically says "Angelina Jolie likes girls." That's about it :-) Their tagline used to be "lesbian life and style" Then it was "for the lesbian in you"- quite saucy! They seem to have dropped it now though altogether.
This post really made me giggle! When it forst came out, I bought every copy for about 2 years! Don't think I actually read it, just liked buying it and sitting on the train with it on display seeing what looks I got - probably no-one even knew it was a lesbian mag, but hey!
I am so so so cliched! I love Angelina, have lots of films, even a little shrine to her! Oh well.
I have to agree with Ellie here - the main fun with Diva is the looks you get when you buy it / read it in public. And nowadays there's hardly any of that compared to the *old days*!
This is painfully true. A large part of why I bought it was so I could go on long train journeys and leave it on the table in front of me, along with liberator or somesuch, in the vain hope that someone would cry "you read all these cool mags! have all my money! let me run away with you to the west indies!" or something. It all seemed so radically in yer face... ah, youth (o:~
But I read it religiously. I'm a zines junkie, I can't help myself.
