Australia as a Slytherin looks to be an interesting premise; he's totally chummy with snakes, so him being a Parselmouth isn't a remote possibility. And lmao, England being conscious with his pure-blood status - somehow, I think it fits him!
Generalising everything I know about my fellow Australians I'd say Oz is a Hufflepuff. The puffs reputation as duffers wouldn't bother him much (hell he may encourage it no-one thinks to blame the Hufflepuff) Let's toss Slytherin out, while Oz can be cunning (when he wants to be), he unfortunetly has no real abition to speak of. Ravenclaw is unlikely too, while Oz is pretty smart he doesn't really value knowladge above all else. Griffindor is a maybe, he's never afraid to charge into his problems (it's so much simpler that way), and bravery isn't an issue, but I'd say his morals are a little flexible (he is so wonderfully hypocrytical). So Hufflepuff for the win~ Oz is really loyal to family (like England, NZ and Canada), he's always in the middle of any social happenings, and has many friends. He'll make fun of you, scare your pants off (with Russia), but it's all in good fun. He isn't afraid to work hard, and he'll get down and dirty (Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures are probably his favourite classes). Loyalty and hardwork
( ... )
I'm quite glad I asked this question, since I've always had the impression that Gryffindor had been the best House for him - he's headlong, stalwart, and outgoing; the usual Gryffindor stereotype. But hell yeah, I get what you mean; I've always had this headcanon that Australia is a bit of a hedonist - drinking, occasionally lazing around, sex - the usual works. Gryffindor would've been a total bust for him.
I've definitely changed my mind. Hufflepuff does suit him best, just like the way you described it. It makes sense when you do dig deep into the Hufflepuffer's psyche, especially the loyalty and hard work bits. And unf, he'd do stupendously in those two subjects, ngl. He'd probably suck at Potions, though; there's too much detail involved, and I don't think Australia has the finesse and precision to pull it off. He'd probably skip a step or two and end up with something completely different, hahaha.
