I did a lot of re-reading last year, much more than usual. In part, this is because the new GRRM book came out and I felt the need to refresh. But in larger part, it's because I didn't have a lot of time to waste on books that might not be good. Old favorites were sure to deliver what I wanted; new ones were a risk. Most everything new I read was by an author I already loved, or was recommend by multiple people whose tastes I trust -- possibly why such a large percentage of new books made the favorites list this year.
Predictably, the numbers of new books dropped. I blame the lack of a commute; I think if I still had my 30 minutes of morning downtime, I could keep reading in spite of my courseload.
For my reference, lists from 2007 (59), 2008 (67), 2009 (67), 2010 (40), and 2011 (34). Work reading not included.
