Elementary: Because it feels like grade-schoolers could do better

My prior view of Elementary was that while there's nothing wrong with a female Watson, and what the hell if you're doing a modernization NYC isn't the worst choice (even though it makes you feel like you're watching any of a dozen different procedurals set there), it gave off the vibe that it wasn't a female Watson because genderbends are awesome ( Read more... )

To be fair, she was a surgeon working on live bodies, so not acclimatized to brutally murdered bodies. And I'm willing to give it a chance at the very least, even though I'm still pissy about them making her a fired surgeon instead of a invalided soldier. :/

*twitch* A year ago, I was thinking bad things about Once Upon a Time because it felt like a Fables ripoff, what with the creator saying things like how his show was totally the first time that Snow was depicted as pregnant and/or wielding a sword. Now I love it.

Thus, it may change in the future, but for now my view of Elementary is not a nice one and I'm left wishing they'd hired one of the various fic authors who've done lovely genderbends we link each other every so often. That, or just made her a BAMF ladykiller and former military doctor who's having employment problems due to all that PTSD and needs a roommate because dear god the rent in NYC is insane.

(speaking of links here's one where they're all sharks)

That is exactly my problem with the show so far. :|b

It would make total sense if she couldn't go back to her job as a surgeon due to PTSD -- even something as simple as hand tremors would keep her from being able to do her job. Losing it because someone died during surgery makes no sense (unless, as my brother pointed out, she somehow took out the anesthesiologist).

I'm gonna punch something if this show gets described as being like a bad fanfic of Sherlock, because I have yet to see a genderbend fic this far from the characters.

I am super not interested in it. They've changed the dynamics too much. :[

Thinking about it, I don't think I'd be against it if they just decided this was going to be another procedural set in NYC with a recovering addict and his sponsor. I mean, House is considered to be an Americanized Holmes that doesn't announce itself as such; if they'd gone with that, I simply wouldn't give a shit. Are they counting on fannish outrage to drive up ratings?

Yep, they're riding the coattails and I hate that shit. :| But yeah, I agree.

I suppose this ensures high ratings for the first episode from people willing to give it a shot . . . and then a sharp drop upon realizing they're not even trying. It probably won't even last the season.
