Ok so I have not used a fabric softner since Froggy was born.  When I did use it I used a liquid fabric softner and a downey ball type thing that I put in at the beginning of the load and would release the softner during the rinse cycle

Yes, you can use vinegar with the downy ball contraption. The motion of the rinse cycle makes it open.

Better late than never? I corroborate that vinegar works in the downy ball. That's what I used doing diapers until I got my hateful front loader.
