you can install the jap language pack on your laptop, just go to ...
Start/Control Panel/Regional and Language Options ... then click on languages, then "install stuff for east asian something or other" and put your xp disk in and whamey, japanesse stuff should work *thumbs up*
Download the Global IME off of Microsoft's website, should work.
Also, yeah - when I studied at TUJ, my other study-abroad friends found they had the same problem, insofar as 3-4 years of Japanese in the US doesn't really teach you much when it actually matters.
Who knows, by the time you get to Japan I might still be there ;-)
