What about sweater vests? They're nerdlyawesome and don't have quite as brief a window of wear opportunity. I'm also being convinced that short sleeve cardigans are in fact a good idea. Because I love wool but Austin doesn't.
On the one hand, sweater vests = hawt, and I kind of need roughly a dozen since it's become painfully obvious that I really need to start wearing my glasses full time and I might as well embrace the indie-nerd vibe. On the other hand, they tend to be a wee bit boring -- knit one, you've kind of knit them all. Although, that said, I have this amazing heathered black/grey/burgandy yarn that's going to become the most emo sweater vest ever to cut itself and weep in the back of my closet, and as soon as I pick out a second colour and buy some more yarn*, I'm getting started on Eunny's Deep-V Argyle Vest because, you know, I'm conducting a secret love affair with all things argyle.
*So, funny story. I bought black and what looked like an icy pale blue-almost-white for that vest. And knitpicks instead sent me like, the ONE shade of blue I've ever seen that I'm unwilling to wear. I figure at some point I'll overdye it, but I wanted something really contrast-y for that vest. Then again, I could just take all the sweater patterns I love
( ... )
I kind of see the blaaah sweater vest thing. I have one on the needles that I just can't bring myself to work on very often because oh my god, so boring. If I see another row of one by one ribbing in a small gauge that's not on a small project I'm going to lose my mind. On the other hand, I've been thinking about trying some of the more interesting shell/tank patterns as a sweater vest. I'm not sure how well a lacy tank would go with an oxford shirt (because I wear nothing else, obviously) but I figured if it's fun to knit it's not exactly a waste of my time
( ... )
I think that if the colours were just right and the pattern weren't obnoxious a lacy tank could look really awesome over an Oxford.
You should not fear colourwork! It's fun and pretty and really not as intimidating as it looks. If you want, once I get started on the vest, we can resart craft nights and I will try my best to poke and prod you into at least trying it.
Yeah, ask Julie how well that works out. I always get persnikety about scarves -- I always get about two feet in and decide that I hate the pattern, the gauge is off, and god forbid I'm using multi-coloured yarn that doesn't pool just so, and I end up unraveling them and starting over. I swear, I average about six false starts to every scarf I actually make.
That said, I do think I'm going to try for actually making X-mas presents this year instead of buying them.
In four months, a wool pullover won't exactly be stupid. In fact, for about fifteen minutes at some random point between the beginning of October and the end of next February, a wool pullover will be Just Perfect. In fact, we're due for a hard winter this year...er, a hard Central Texas winter, which means enough ice to kill idiot Texas drivers and/or anyone unlucky enough to be near one. Then you'll kick yourself for not having made that wool pullover.
I am going to be so well prepared for that fifteen minutes. I'm seriously going to be changing sweaters every three or four minutes. I will be the most hardcore-Texas-winterer ever.
Except for the part where, knowing my luck, I would totally forget every sweater, long-sleeved shirt and jacket I own at home and have to take cover in a mall or something.
If there is ice this winter, I'm totally having a board game night for all my friends who are willing to brave the Austin traffic.
There's a new tradition in my family. Every Christmas, the only thing I recieve from anyone in my family is Winter Wear. In fact, my sister alone gives me more Winte Wear than any reasonable human being would ever need to wear in a single Austin winter. This is made more amusing by the fact that she lives in Austin, and knows exactly how unnecessary that many heavy sweaters are.
I've taken to setting the heater to "if you come on I'll shoot you" during the winter and wearing them to bed so they don't get lonely.
I have to admit, I'm deeply in love with winter wear -- I dunno, something about a really nice peacoat or super soft pullover just kinda pushes my buttons -- but I've never been the kind of girl to suffer for fashion, even my own dubious brand of it. Which leads me to the conclusion that the oly possible course of action left to me is to move to Nova Scotia.
We should do something soon. I haven't seen you in way too long.
