then again, the part about the metric system never catching on - is the metric system something you've rooted for? because i have, although maybe only because i haven't spent my life learning the intricacies of the english measuring system - just the english language.
i've never had an opinion on using the metric system. i think it'd be easier probably, yeah, but we're fine with the standard system already. anyway, spelling things phoenetically would prove hazardous because there are words that people pronounce differently (interesting, either, neither) and then there are homonyms and it'd just be a mess. stupid, stupid idea.
Save me!!! I couldn't even finish the article. Some of those words are much worse than the words they come from. If it wasn't for context I would have never got uennyon or wuns. Proving how much of a stupid idea this is.
I'm in a spelling-optional major and that still bothered me.
Didn't they standardize language for a reason because you know, olde englyshe was harde to spelle. well I rather like Englyshe with the Y in it but that's not the point.
Oh god. This article drove me up the wall. I agree with what others before me said--I often had trouble reading their "phonetic" spellings. It seemed much more confusing. Plus I still like to use British spellings and I ALWAYS say "theatre" rather than "theater". Honestly, it's just so much American laziness. People have been learning to read and write in English for hundreds of years. It can be done and it should be. This is not to say that I spell every word right 24/7. But come on, we are above abandoning the English language we know. I don't want to live in a civilization that decides spelling is just too tricky and we have to revert to beein comepleat ideots. I will perfect my Spanish and move to Spain if it comes to that.
this is a really annoyingly-written article. if you're going to go with the phonetic idea, you should at least be consistent and right, or else you just look stoopid. like this person. i mean, obviously it's ironic, but still annoying. usually i'm all for changing the "system" but if kids have been learning to read/write the way it is now then obviously it can be done. tricky spelling makes english fun!
