because mom is too fast, and i am too slow.

bright eyes - sunrise, sunset
xiu xiu - fast car
elliott smith - angeles (live on kcrw)

sunrise, sunset

sunrise, sunset
sunrise, sunset
swiftly go the days
sunrise, sunset
you wake up
then you undress
it always is the same
the sunrise and the sunsets
you're lying
while you confess
keep trying to explain
the sunrise and the sunsets
you realize
then you forget
what you've been trying
to retain

but everybody knows it's all about the things that get stuck inside of your head
like the songs your roommate sings, a vision of her body as she stretches out on your bed
and she raises her hands in the air, asked you when was the last time you looked in the mirror
because you've changed
yeah, you've changed

the sunrise, the sunsets
you're hopeful and
then you regret
the circle never breaks
with a sunrise and a sunset
there's a change of heart or address
is there nothing that remains?
for a sunrise or a sunset
you're manic or you're depressed
will you ever feel okay?
for a sunrise or a sunset
your lover is an actress
did you really think she'd stay?

for a sunrise or a sunset
you're either coming or you just left
but you're always on the way
towards a sunrise or a sunset
a scribble or a sonnet
they are really just the same
to the sunrise or a sunset
the master and his servant
have exactly the same fate
it's a sunrise and a sunset
from a cradle to a casket
there is no way to escape
the sunrise and a sunset
hold your sadness like a puppet
keep putting on the play

but everything you do is leading to the point where you just won't know what to do
at that moment you may laugh but there is someone there who will be laughing louder than you
so it's true, the trick is complete, you become everything you said you never would be
you're a fool
you're a fool

sunrise, sunset
sunrise, sunset
sunrise and the sunsets
sunrise, sunset
sunrise, the sunsets
the sunrise, the sunsets
sunrise, sunset
go home to your apartment
put the cassette in the
tapedeck and
let that fever play
sunrise, sunset
where are you, arienette?
where are you, arienette?

fast car

you've got a fast car
i want a ticket to anywhere
maybe we can make a deal
maybe together we can get somewhere

anyplace is better
starting from zero got nothing to lose
maybe we'll make something
me myself i got nothing to prove

you've got a fast car
i've got a plan to get us out of here
i've been working at east side's health and children's center
i've managed to save just a little bit of money

we won't have to drive too far
just across the border and into the city
you and i can both get jobs
finally see what it means to be living

you see my old man's got a problem
he lives with his prescription drugs and that's the way it is
his body's too old for working
his body's too young to look like his

my mama went off and left him
she wanted more from life than he could give
somebody's got to take care of him
so i quit life and that's what i did

you got a fast car
but is it fast enough so we can fly away
we gotta make a decision
leave tonight or live and die this way

i remember we were driving
driving in your car
the speed so fast it felt like i was drunk
the city lights lay out before us
and your arm felt nice wrapped round my shoulder
and i had a feeling that i belonged
i had a feeling that i could be someone
be someone
be someone

you got a fast car
we go cruising to entertain ourselves
you still don't have a job
and i work in the market as a checkout girl

i know things will get better
you'll find work and i'll get promoted
we'll move out of the shelter
buy a big house and live in the suburbs

i remember we were driving
driving in your car
the speed so fast it felt like i was drunk
the city lights lay out before us
and your arm felt nice wrapped round my shoulder
and i had a feeling that i belonged
i had a feeling that i could be someone
be someone
be someone

you got a fast car
i got a job that pays all our bills
you stay out late drinking at the bar
you see your friends more than you do your kids

i'd always hoped for better
maybe together you and me would fin dit
i got no plans, i ain't going nowhere
so take your fast car and keep on driving

i remember we were driving
driving in your car
the speed so fast it felt like i was drunk
the city lights lay out before us
and your arm felt nice wrapped round my shoulder
and i had a feeling that i belonged
i had a feeling that i could be someone
be someone
be someone

you got a fast car
but is it fast enough so we can fly away
we gotta make a decision
leave tonight or live and die this way

angeles

someone's always soming around here trailing some new kill
says i seen your picture on a hundred dollar bill
and what's a game of chance to you to him is one
of real skill
so glad to meet you, angeles
picking up the ticket shows there's money to be made
go on and lose the gamble
that's the history of the trade
you add up all the cards left to play to zero
and sign up with evil, angeles
don't start me trying now
uh huh
uh huh
uh huh
cause i'm all over it, angeles
i could make you satisfied in everything you do
all your secret wishes could right now be coming true
and be forever with my poison arms around you
no one's gonna fool around with us
no one's gonna fool around with us
so glad to meet you, angeles

too emo maybe but they're all i can hear and please believe me when i say they're beautiful.

(but if the first one is, it's in a miserable way, and i wish the feelings behind it didn't exist and that conor oberst didn't feel them, but i'm glad that he made such cathartic music about them. i don't know whether catharsis is supposed to include relief or purification or anything but the tense waiting note that the song ends on, but if it includes emotional purging in the throw-up-all-of-your-doubts-and-insecurities-and-look-at-the-pattern-they-make-on-the-carpet sort of way then this song feels like catharsis.)
