Madder than a bucket of frogs...

So I decided that I would re-watch The End of Time Part 1. My first impressions were not favourable at all but admittedly watching something in a turkey coma on Christmas Day isn't always the best way to see something so I thought I'd give it another go ( Read more... )

Oh I agree totally.
The whole thing was a WTF-fest.
DT deserves better as his swan song, obviously RTD has much more ego than talent.
I've also watched it twice and see no saving factors in it. I'll wait to see part 2 before I cancel my order for the DVD (just in case there is substantial Jack-ness in it, which I seriously doubt)
Every review I've read so far has panned it (of course these are not the BBC cronies who got to preview it and hyped it so much)
Seriously, RTD...step away from the keyboard.

If Jack's in Part 2 it will be 1 scene if that. It's not really his story and I'm not sure there is much room for him in it. I was rather expecting the people I had been spoiled about showing up in Part 1 and establishing the story - I can't see how they would fit into a second part.

Well the people who previewed it aren't BBC cronies but unconnected journos but they certainly gushed a good deal more than was warranted.

Well supposedly he is in part 2 (but I agree I doubt it will be more than a single scene)
I could see where the story would hold a lot of POSSIBILITY for including Jack (since the time vortex lives in him). But that would take much more imagination than RTD is likely to show.
I noticed all the gushing was done prior to the public viewing everything I've read since trashes it. Which is why I figured it was BBC cronies previewing it.

To my knowledge only 1 prior companion has been seen filming and I guess even that could fall by the wayside - I'm not now really expecting many more characters to show up in Part 2.

I don't think the ratings were good for anything this year. People have other demands on their time - internet, games consoles, dvds etc so ratings were down across the board. The episode wasn't great but it would still have got the ratings it got even it had been fabulous.

What was that about Neismith getting Torchwood? Wouldn't Unit be in charge of that? if there was anything left? Could he be referring to a different Torchwood than 1 or 3? if not why was that gate so intact? Shades of:
Harry Potter
The Producers
Flash Gordon
I agree, Tennet was great as was Cribbins but RTD needs to find another line.

Naismith apparently retrieved the Immortality Gate after Torchwood fell. I don't think it was anywhere near camp enough to be compared to Flash Gordon and I don't really see the Harry Potter connection (Immortality Gate being a very different beast from the Veil that claimed Sirius' life). Don't see any connection to The Producers.

I think RTD has reached the end of the line - just as well he's moving onto pastures new.

The last scene of Flash Gordon was of a female picking a ring up out of the fire pyre and Ming Laughing.
Voltamort rising from the cauldron brought back by followers
Blond and Germanic overtones perhaps more historic than Producers.

I can't think that RTD didn't intentionally write it as a parody. Or at least as a really long, really wacked out dream sequence. Because... seriously? I mean... seriously? To all of it?

I just skimmed your post and what went into my brain, I totally agree with. But M and I just got home from a daytrip to the city so I'll get back to it later and reread, but I have a feeling I'm going to largely agree with everything you've said. M, however, enjoyed it. So I don't want to kill his squee.

Oh I'd love it if he wrote it as a big joke. I can't believe that anyone involved with this actually thought at any point that this was a good idea. I mean I appreciate that we've only seen half of it and that maybe the remaining 75 minutes will completely redeem it but I somewhat doubt it.

I watched it with my dad who adores Who and apart from the ending he thought it was dire. It was just truly bizarre television.
