I wouldn't know where to start if I were building a house.

Also, why did you decide to build your own place?

it was an incredibly generous offer made to us from my best friend's parents. they offered that we could build a place on their property and then pay rent at a much lower price than we would be able to in the bay area. they, in turn, would get the money back that they invested from our rent and we would have more affordable housing, which allowed me to stay in the bay area on my leave of absence from school. it's been pretty crazy.

alina's stepdad is a retired contractor, so he used to build houses for a living. he did all the specialized work and told us what to do, and alina and i built it. we do all of the manual labor and help with the specialized skills (like electrical wiring). In retrospect, we wouldn't do it over again because we didn't realize what a stressful situation it would be, but it's been a crazy good learning experience. i can now say that i know how to build a house!
