Yes, they did. My gran's maiden name was Forrest, and it's my dad's middle name. Mum was about 9 and a half months pregnant (yes, I was that late) and Granny was bugging her about the names they'd chosen. My folks had agreed not to tell anyone, but apparently my gran went on and on and on until my mum gave up and said "David for a boy and Ruth for a girl." Granny said something about how the middle name would obviously be Forrest, and mum got mad and told her the baby wasn't having a middle name. And she didn't go back on it!! It was my dad's mum, and I think she couldn't handle the interfering!!
