A couple of questions; hopefully they haven't been answered and my reading comprehension is fail.
1. no fandom characters can be used as PBs - I'm assuming this means two-dimensional fandom characters, not three dimensional? What I mean is, when you say no fandom, say someone rps Dexter Morgan from Dexter, does that mean his actor Michael C. Hall can't be used as a PB? Or will it be okay, as long as the PB icons aren't of the actor playing the character, but just the actor himself? Does that make sense?
2. I have an OC in mind, but I don't have like an actor as a PB, but I use stock images to represent her. They're not all of the same model (I don't believe) but they're close enough in appearance; is that okay or do you prefer all PB icons to be the exact same person.
3. Should I reserve even though I have an OC, or is that needed for Canon characters only?

1. You're right, it means fandom characters from two-dimensional fandoms or video games. Actors and actresses can be used. However, if we get a player who plays a fandom character like Dexter and they feel uncomfortable allowing someone else to use Michael C. Hall as a PB, we'll probably have to tell the potential appee to find another PB. Right now though, obviously, it's not a problem, so go right ahead!

2. As long as they look similar enough in appearance, it's fine. I'd prefer someone not use more than one PB for one character if they use popular models and actresses/actors though, since another player might want to use one for their character and it would be unfair. If it's mostly just stock images though, it's fine.

3. Reserves are only for fandom characters. You cannot reserve PBs and hopefully no one else out there is planning to app your own original character ;)

Kind of a weird question, but if a character is injured in the canon point they're taken from, do they get healed in the process of coming over to Splendor, or...?

That's entirely up to you. There's a part on the application where you can say what their appearance will be once they arrive. If you want them to be a little banged up because of a fight from canon, go for it. If not, they'll be arrive perfectly fine.

Hello, question. <3

Is there any information on how technologically advanced, say... the Bungalows district is? They are PERFECT for Link, but unfortunately he is technologically retarded and I'd like to know allllll the things no one will let him touch so as to prevent the whole district from burning to the ground.

Also! I'd like to ask a question for a friend; an applicant can only reserve one character at a time, but can they apply for two characters at once, or is there a period of time in which only one application will be reviewed before another can be sent in?

The information on the various housing districts can be found here and here. If you see the pictures, you can get a good idea of the amount of technology in the area. It is very much like a small island, sea-side town.

There aren't any rules about how many characters can be applied for at once, but we prefer if you submit only one at once if you are not currently in the game. Taking on two characters to begin with may seem fun, but we want to encourage you to be active with one character before you take on another.

I did read both, and look at the pictures! Unfortunately, I'm still a bit at loss as to exactly how much technology he'll be able to get his hands on. Do the shops selling firewood mean that there are no ovens/stoves? Are there woodstoves? If so, are they inside or outside? Things like that. I understand if it's a lot of information to dish out-- I'm okay with going along and moderating it myself, but I would like just a bit more clarification if that's alright. ;; I hope it's not too torublesome.

No worries!

The firewood is intended to be for bonfires and cook outs. Since the interior of the bungalows are relatively modern, the kitchen area is as well, however it is not very big. There would be a small refrigerator and a relatively small electric stove and oven.

If both fandom and original characters are allowed, then is it okay to app video game protagonists who kind of...straddle the line between fandom and OC? Like, the character has a few lines and a bit of defined history, but everything beyond that (including name, gender, and race) is left to the player to decide, so everyone's take is likely to be very different.

The general rule is, if more than 50% of your character's combined personality, information, and history are headcanon, they're considered a fandom oc. Do you think you could come up with enough about your character that you could solidly back up using in game facts?

The history would pretty much be all canon, since canon kind of implies that not much interesting happens until the hero leaves home. Main exception here would be that the race/gender/name are left up to the player, although they have zero impact on the plot whatsoever.

The personality...the lines he gets in-game kind of imply HEROIC ENERGETIC GO-GETTER, which I do mostly stick to; I kind of write in a couple of private fears/neuroses that I think follow logically enough from the events in his canon history, because...well, it's a Gameboy game from 1990, and gaming characters from that era tend not to have a lot of depth, so it's the kind of thing I'd want to expand on just to make him more of a person and less of a cardboard cutout.

So I think most of it is reasonably within the bounds of what the game laid out; it's mostly just a matter of making it a little more real and a little less....lol.

It sounds like your character would fit well within the character guidelines of this game, then. Just make sure to point out in your application the areas that are purely speculation, and not really based off any in-game info.

Also, in situations like this, relatively vague histories are acceptable, as we don't want to force you to come up with a history if you feel more comfortable leaving it as is.

Couple of questions for you anonymous September 28 2010, 18:49:18 UTC
1) I presently do not have an active personal livejournal, but am interested in playing, is this a problem, if so, why?
2) How is the language issue addressed, both spoken and written?

Reply

fairygodmother September 28 2010, 20:59:33 UTC
One, yes we do require you to have a livejournal. You don't have to use it all the time, as people are allowed to apply using sock journals, but it is an alternate way for us to contact you that we would like to have, regardless if we have your email or instant messaging contact.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the language issue. Could you elaborate?

Reply

hansel_grendal September 28 2010, 22:03:58 UTC
With the language issue, I mean some characters may speak Japanese, whilst others speak English, for example.

All characters - by default - will be able to understand each others languages in Splendor. Splendor tries to break down as many barriers as it can between it's inhabitants, hopefully allowing their experience in Splendor to be more pleasant; language is one of those barriers.

This isn't to say you're not allowed to have a character no one else can understand, but the game might not be as enjoyable if your character cannot speak with anyone directly!
