Notes: Excuse the stretch on the theme. I just couldn't bring myself to actually put the theme explicitly in the fic. Also, I'm attempting to write the 30 stories in some kind of order, so you'll have to have read
White Petals.

“Nadeshiko.” The hissed whisper came standing in the hall between classes. Nadeshiko was lost in thought, appearing to be studying the rather bland contents of her locker. Her cousin Sonomi was leaning against the metal lockers beside her, eyes looking down the hall at something.
“Nadeshiko,” Sonomi hissed again when she got no response, adding in a gentle nudge to Nadeshiko’s side for emphasis.
“Oh! What is it, Sonomi-chan?” Nadeshiko asked, looking up in surprise. She glanced around rapidly, searching for the object of Sonomi’s fascination.
“You’re so clueless,” Sonomi sighed in resignation. “That boy, down the hall…”
“Oh, him?” Nadeshiko returned to rummaging in her locker. “What about him?”
“He’s coming this way. I think he’s noticed you.” Sonomi was practically beaming with pride. It always seemed that she took more pride in her cousin than Nadeshiko did in herself. “He’s not bad, Nadeshiko.”
Nadeshiko graced him with a glance over her shoulder. “He doesn’t look bad is what you mean. We don’t know anything about him, Sonomi-chan.” Actually, he looked rather like someone she wouldn’t want to go out with-proud and expectant of her affections.
“Well, it’s a good start, isn’t it?” Nadeshiko frowned but said nothing. She would rather not start fighting with her cousin now. Instead she steadfastly returned to her locker, resolving to keep her head buried in its depths until the boy had passed. She shook her head as she heard Sonomi engage him in conversation. She didn’t want to go out with him. She knew that’s why he had come over-that’s why any of them came over.
“Nadeshiko!” Sonomi cried eagerly when he was gone. “Friday night! Seven o’clock!” She was practically dancing in the hall. Nadeshiko smiled sadly and nodded. Sonomi was so much more excited than she was…
“Sonomi-chan… why didn’t you ask him out?” The question was one she’d been pondering for a long time. Sonomi was always setting her up on dates, while never going out on any herself.
“Because…” Sonomi looked a little bewildered at Nadeshiko’s innocent question. “Well… they all want to go out with you, not me.”
“Someday, Sonomi…” Nadeshiko called over her shoulder as she headed off for her next class. “Ask someone out for yourself, not for me.”
~~~~~~~~
“Nadeshiko! He’s here!” Sonomi called.
“I’m coming,” Nadeshiko replied half-heartedly. She really wasn’t interested. It wasn’t that she wasn’t interested in the opposite sex; she was just waiting for the right person to come along. She wanted someone who was kind, sensitive, caring. She wanted someone who understood her without words, someone who didn’t need long, uncomfortable conversations to know who she was. She wanted someone who would both respect and love her, someone who needed her as much as she needed them. She wanted someone who would be romantic and sweet-and she wanted to find him herself. She doubted that any boy Sonomi picked out would be the right kind of person for her.
She sighed and reached to fix her hair one last time, hand sliding deftly across the smooth surface of her vanity to search for a barrette to pin back her hair with. As they drifted over the polished wood they were met with the soft, papery touch of a dried flower. Smiling faintly, she picked up the long dried gardenia. The petals were slightly crushed, and they were no longer a vibrant white but a pale yellow-brown. She sniffed delicately… the scent was still there, locked away between the once-silky petals.
She wondered where the man with the other gardenia was.
She wondered if he was thinking about her as she thought about him as she gently twirled the flower in her fingers.
Gently she laid the gardenia down in the center of her vanity, illuminated in the tiny pool of light from a miniature lamp. Then she picked up the metal barrette and slid it through her hair, pinning it firmly away from her face. She finished getting ready, trying to look her best. She wasn’t sure why, since it wasn’t this boy she wanted to impress. She couldn’t even remember his name; she’d have to discreetly ask Sonomi before she left.
As she walked out of the house with her date, she found herself secretly hoping to meet a man with a white gardenia in his hand that night.
~~~~~~~~
Her date was pleasant enough; but then, she said that about every boy she ever went out with. In most cases it was completely untrue. This time, he was overbearing and smug. He acted as though she should be pleased he’d decided to ask her out; Nadeshiko could have cared less. But she acted accordingly, smiling pleasantly and not arguing or making waves, just allowing him to control and dominate the evening. She didn’t mind, really; there was nothing she wanted out of the evening that he could give her.
After dinner and a movie he began walking her home, strutting ever so slightly. It was then that Nadeshiko noticed they were in the little park where she’d first met the man with the gardenia. She paused on the walkway, gazing up into the branches from which she’d fallen. Maybe…
“Do you think you could leave me here?” she asked curiously, continuing to look into the trees.
“Eh?”
“Don’t worry about me. I’ll be all right. I just want to stay here for a little bit.”
“Well, all right, if you’re sure you don’t want me to walk you back.”
“Oh no, it’s fine. Thank you,” she finished politely, moving to sit down on a nearby bench. Quickly he caught her arm and pulled her to him, moving to kiss her. Startled, and uncharacteristically willing to show her indignation, Nadeshiko twisted her head away so that his lips lightly brushed her cheek. She kept her eyes averted, waiting for him to release her and leave. After a few moments he did, his footsteps disappearing into the dark night.
Once she knew he was gone, she sat down on the bench and took several deep breaths. She realized then that she didn’t want to be set up on dates by Sonomi anymore. That there really wasn’t any reason she could think of to get all dressed up on a Friday night for someone. That the sort of relationships her classmates were looking for were so different from what she wanted that there was no way they could ever be compatible. That from now on, she would wait for the man who would fulfill her wishes patiently-because, after all, if he was destined to be her other half, they surely someday they would meet of their own accord.
And… if she took a deep enough breath and closed her eyes and paused for the briefest of moments before exhaling, she could still taste the scent of a white gardenia in the air.
