Notes: Wheee, an update from UCLA! In celebration of their victory today in the first round of the NCAA tournament~ Companion to Little Secrets. Written for ayasugi_san, because I promised her a ficlet about Touya and cleaners. Well, it didn't quite turn out that way...

Where had Touya disappeared to? Yukito was used to losing Touya in grocery stores and drugstores; Touya always had a very clear idea of what they needed, what coupons they had and what the most efficient path through the store was. It was quite impressive to Yukito, who preferred to just sort of wander through a store looking for things that struck his fancy or that he recalled needing.

Touya said that if they shopped his way, they’d end up with far too much food. Then he’d laugh and say they had that anyway in order to keep Yukito happy.

He found Touya in the home products section, scrutinizing the tiny slips of paper in his hand and the corresponding item on the shelf. “Ne, To-ya, what are you looking for?”

“Cleaner,” he mumbled distractedly, finally leaning down to pick a bottle of gold liquid, the label proudly announcing that it was “pine scented.” He placed it in the shopping cart and handed Yukito the appropriate coupon, then moved on towards the laundry detergent.

“Which kind of detergent are we using now?” he asked, studying the prices critically.

“Um… it’s blue?” Yukito offered. That really was all he knew. “And it smells nice…” Even if he did the laundry fairly often, more than Touya because Touya was so busy, he had very little idea as to the brand that they used. Not that they used one with any regularity… “Whatever was on sale last time, I think. We rarely use the same one twice in a row, you know.”

“True,” Touya agreed. “Well, I don’t have any coupons this week, and you told me we’re out-“

“We’re definitely out.” There was still enough for one more load, but one load wouldn’t go very far.

“-so we’ve got to get something. Any suggestions?”

“Not really…”

“Hmm, it’s so much harder without a coupon. Color-safe bleach?”

“I don’t think I bleach very many things…”

“Spring Breeze? Oh wait, that’s just a scent. Hypo-allergenic… what?”

“That one’s if normal detergent makes your skin itchy, or something, I think. We don't need that. Just a regular one will do, To-ya, really.”

“Okay. Do you have a calculator?”

“A what?!”

“Never mind, they say on the little tags how much per ounce it is.”

“To-ya…” Yukito found himself smiling, almost to the point of idiocy, at the way Touya was fretting.

“Here, put this in the basket, please.”

“Okay. Is that all?”

“No, we need lotion.”

“Why?” Yukito asked curiously, pushing the cart level with Touya. “You know, we could just go to the drugstore if we need-“

“No, you really need lotion. It’s cold, and you do all the laundry and wash the dishes so often… The skin dries out and gets really rough. It looks painful, to be honest. I don’t like it. I want your skin to be nice and smooth and healthy.”

Yukito smiled. He loved the way Touya cared about something so little as the state of the skin on the back of his knuckles. There was something appealing about the fact that Touya was trying to be so domestic-that he went through the trouble of cutting and organizing coupons every weekend, that he planned out shopping trips days in advance in intricate lists, that he spent most of Saturday helping Yukito clean and set the house in order. Perhaps it was the thought that Touya’s investment in domestic life was somehow an investment in their relationship that made the overly domestic side of Touya so desirable.

They finally reached the next aisle with lotion at one end, and together they stood together contemplating why in the world people-women, in particular-needed so many choices and scents.

”You just need lotion,” Touya frowned, irritated. “Why isn’t there just lotion? Normal, unscented lotion with no additives? All you need is something with moisturizer. That’s it.”

“Well… there’s normal cream…” Yukito offered, though he knew there was a difference.

“Cream’s too heavy,” Touya said immediately. “Too thick. It’d be better just to have a thicker lotion to put on the back of your hands after you submerge them in water for a long time.”

“How about this one?” Yukito suggested, lifting a bottle off the shelf and holding it out for inspection.

Touya took it and studied it thoroughly. “Oil free, that’s good, you don’t want your hands disgustingly slippery. Moisturizer… Oh, aloe, that’s a good bonus. That’ll heal the cuts on your knuckles-“

“I don’t have-“ Yukito protested, glancing down at the back of his hands.

“Yes, you do,” Touya argued, eyeing Yukito’s hands critically. “There are tiny little cuts all across the back of your hand, you see? It’s from the skin drying out and then you bending the knuckles. You need to make sure you get on the knuckles and between them, too, otherwise it’ll be red and chapped and painful for awhile.”

Yukito took the bottle back and sniffed it. “It smells nice,” he offered. He discreetly squirted a small amount into his hands and rubbed the bluish semi-liquid as Touya had directed. The raw parts of his hands immediately felt relieved, and he was satisfied.

“It does,” Touya agreed after lifting Yukito’s hand to smell it. “Lavender, I think. Fitting, somehow,” he continued, setting the bottle in the cart.

“Ne, To-ya, I think you need some too. Your hands may not be as bad as mine, but you should take care of them now.”

“I’ll just use yours,” Touya shrugged.

Yukito frowned. “No, it’s the wrong scent for you, To-ya. You need something…” he skimmed the shelf, eyes falling on a bottle near the bottom. “Like this.”

One of Touya’s eyebrows rose. “Sandalwood?”

“It smells… like you.” He couldn’t explain it, and especially not to Touya. There was something gentle and masculine and calming about the scent that reminded him distinctly of Touya at night when they were curled up together and he was drifting off to sleep. There was something beautiful and comforting and safe about that moment that he never wanted to forget.

Touya seemed to understand, though, and he smiled and set the second bottle next to the first. Gently he pulled Yukito close to him and kissed his forehead chastely, lingering there for a moment, his breath stirring the fine hairs at Yukito’s hairline.

“Let’s go home,” he whispered, and Yukito was only too happy to comply.
