He couldn’t help but notice how good Touya looked in blue.
Well, to his eyes Touya looked good in almost anything (or nothing at all, he thought with a little smile), but blue was a particularly nice color.
He noticed as they were walking back to Touya’s house after school how nicely the pale, pale blue of the school uniform suited him. He noticed as Touya came down the stairs so they could go to the market the darker blue of his long coat. He noticed it later that night as they were standing in the kitchen cooking, the blue of Touya’s apron catching Yukito’s eye every time his friend moved.
He mentioned it over dinner: “To-ya, I like the color blue on you.” They were alone in the house, Touya’s father out of town at an academic conference and Sakura spending the night at Tomoyo’s.
Touya smiled, reached over to ruffle his hair. “I guess that’s a compliment, huh?” He took another bite of croquette and chewed thoughtfully. “Well, then, you’ll be pleased later.” He seemed to realize the awkwardness of his statement just after he said it, the next mouthful of food paused on his fork halfway to his mouth.
Yukito grinned and shifted, unfolding his legs so his foot just barely brushed Touya’s leg, chin lowering to rest on top of his hands, eyes narrowing to cat-like slits. If he’d really wanted, he could have purred. “What’s that supposed to mean, To-ya?” he asked, nearly laughing at the blush that spread across Touya’s cheeks.
“N-n-nothing,” Touya managed to stammer, pushing his chair back and gathering his dishes. “Just… I made something…”
“Oh?” Yukito asked curiously, raising an eyebrow as he gathered his own plate. He knew that he should stop, it wasn’t very nice to tease Touya like this, but he got the opportunity so rarely he couldn’t bear to pass it up. “Show me,” he ordered, coming up behind Touya and rubbing his cheek against the material covering his shoulder blade.
“Later,” Touya insisted firmly, plunging his hands into the sink filled with hot, soapy water, vigorously scrubbing his dishes. Yukito decided to let it lie and slid his own china into the sink, taking the towel to dry the warm dishes.
They were settled on the couch, watching a movie on the television, when Touya stood and stretched. Yukito watched him curiously, wondering what was going on. It was only ten-thirty, far earlier than they would normally be going to sleep on a Saturday night. They’d already bathed (separately, unfortunately), so Yukito couldn’t think of anything else Touya might be doing. Unless he was hungry… “Shall we sleep down here tonight?” Touya suggested casually; Yukito had the strong suspicion he’d been thinking it for a while.
He nodded agreement, still curious. “Okay, I’ll bring down some blankets and pillows. Why don’t you go change into your pajamas?”
He followed Touya upstairs and pulled his things out of the bottom drawer. Once done changing into his green and yellow flannel pajamas, he padded down the stairs to find Touya crouched on the floor of the living room, a nest of comforters and pillows arranged where the coffeetable had once been.
“I’m going upstairs to change, you can make yourself a snack if you want,” Touya’s voice drifted down the stairs to him-Yukito was already in the kitchen, milk warming on the stove, cocoa and honey set out. He rummaged through the pantry for the chocolate crackers that he and Touya liked and set them out on a little plate. He was surprised that it was taking Touya so long; he was able to make hot cocoa and warm milk with honey and set it all out in the living room before Touya returned downstairs.
“Are those new pajamas?” he asked immediately. They weren’t the usual sweatpants and t-shirt that Touya usually slept in.
“Yeah.”
“They’re blue,” Yukito noted, rather pleased. Blue and… purple, but it was all right. At least they didn’t look perfectly awful on Touya.
Not that anything did, he recalled.
“I made them. To match yours,” Touya continued a little awkwardly. He settled down beside Yukito, taking a cracker and his milk. “I thought we’d make it a proper sleepover.”
Yukito smiled and snuggled against Touya’s warmth. “I like them.” It was all he needed to say.
He was sipping his cocoa and nibbling at a cracker, watching the late news on the television, when he felt a slight weight on his head. With a little curious mewl he set down his mug and blindly reached up for whatever it was on his head.
“I made something for you, too,” Touya said, face disappearing behind his mug as Yukito pulled a soft nightcap off his head. It was the same green as his pajamas (he didn’t want to know how many fabric stores Touya had raided to find it), with a yellow brim and a little stuffed yellow star hanging off the tip.
In short, it was adorable. And he loved it.
And he told Touya so. “It’s so cute. It reminds me of the sweater you made for Sakura-“
“Yeah, yeah,” Touya cut him off hurriedly, blush rising again.
“Thank you.” He settled the cap back on his head, grinning at Touya. Impulsively he leaned forward and kissed Touya quickly. Blushing fully now, Touya looked away and patted Yukito’s head.
Sometime around one o’clock they turned out the lights, leaving just the glow of the television as it played an old movie illuminating the room, casting its strange technicolor glow over their bodies spread out on the floor. Yukito was drifting off to sleep, face buried in Touya’s shoulder, when he had a final conscious thought.
“Ne, To-ya? Where’s your nightcap?”
“Didn’t make one,” was the barely distinguishable mumble.
Yukito grinned. That meant Touya was too embarrassed to admit that he had. Sleepily he reached for his own, sloppily draping it over Touya’s ear before wrapping his arms and Touya’s waist and snuggling closer.
“You can wear mine, then, until I find yours. Good-night.”
