He can’t remember when eating ice cream became a significant part of their relationship. The first time he can remember was a day after school when he casually suggested to Yukito that they get a snack. It was hot, so Yukito had pointed to a little ice cream parlor. They’d gone in, each gotten a cone of ice cream, and had licked and crunched on the way to Touya’s house.

Now they go as often as they can, whenever they feel like it. Sometimes it’s the night before a big test as they contemplate pulling an all-nighter. Other times it’s as they walk down a street on a Saturday afternoon. After one of Touya’s basketball games. After a simple dinner at home. The occasion varies, but somehow the trip is always special.

Touya knows what he likes, and rarely orders something different. Sometimes, Yukito can coax him into trying something new, but more often than not, Touya has a scoop of chocolate chip in a waffle cone. Yukito is the adventurous one, keeping a neat little list of all the flavors he has tried. Every trip is something different, if he can manage it.

It’s summer, again, and they’re standing at the counter of an ice cream store, Yukito studying the freezers of ice cream below. Touya has already ordered and is waiting patiently, even though he can feel the cold ice cream beginning to melt. He doesn’t hurry Yukito, or urge him to pick faster. He merely licks the drop sliding down the cone towards his fingers as he watches Yukito’s intent expression.

A few minutes later they walk out, Yukito carefully poking his spoon into the little mound of green ice cream in the paper cup. “Mint,” he says thoughtfully. Touya knows he’s tried it before, and thinks perhaps the shop didn’t have any new flavors for Yukito to taste. Mint seems somehow appropriate to him… light, sweet, refreshing.

“Ne, To-ya, your favorite flavor is chocolate chip, right?” As if it needed restating.

Touya takes a small bite and nods. “I guess I like mint chocolate chip too, except the mint gives it a very different flavor from vanilla.” One that now reminds him vaguely of Yukito, but he isn’t going to say that.

Yukito nods understandingly. “They’re sort of similar, I suppose. I like mint chocolate chip, too, but I think I like just plain mint better.”

“Not many places have just plain mint,” Touya notes.

“I know. I like the chips in mint chocolate chip-it’s like a little crunchy surprise, you know?-but sometimes the chocolate gets too thick in your mouth, and I’d rather just have ice cream.”

Touya has to think for a second about what Yukito has just said. He never noticed such a thing before. Perhaps he always just liked the consistency of the ice cream mixed with the creamy chocolate. Who knew? But he reasons it doesn’t matter much, considering the pleased look on Yukito’s face as he licks his spoon.
“Ne, To-ya!” Yukito suddenly cries excitedly, coming up beside Touya. “If I have mint, and you have chocolate chip, if we mix them together, we should get mint chocolate chip!”

“I don’t think that’s quite how it works…” Touya begins, trying not to laugh.

“But it’s reasonable to think so, isn’t it?”

Not really, Touya thinks, but then, regular logic doesn’t always work with Yukito. Perhaps he’s right.

And it will be an interesting experiment, won’t it?

Carefully he takes a bite of his ice cream, savoring the vanilla and chocolate taste for a moment, before leaning over and drawing Yukito in a deep kiss. He knows he’s blushing a little as he pulls away, but he can’t help but think that kissing with a mouth full of ice cream isn’t such a bad idea.

Yukito is blinking, running his tongue over his lips and the inside of his mouth. Touya grins, forcing down his embarrassment, and asks, “So, does your mouth taste like mint chocolate chip now?”

Understanding dawns on Yukito, and he smiles a little slyly. Making sure Touya is watching, he takes another bite of his mint ice cream, sliding his tongue over the bowl of the spoon, taking his sweet time licking the spoon clean with the tip of his tongue. He’s tempted to laugh at the expression on Touya’s face, which straddles the line between embarrassed and entranced.

He ponders dramatically, tapping the spoon against his lower lip. “I don’t know if I want to tell you, To-ya. You didn’t believe me, after all. Maybe you should kiss me again and find out.”

Deciding to ignore the fact that they are in a public place, Touya thinks that this was a very good experiment.
