”It’s funny how someone can live each and every day without knowing that their existence is the reason you live."

Yukito is oblivious.

No, not completely. Not entirely. He’s very selective, and he pretends well. He knows the effect he has on Sakura, and even the brat, but it doesn’t change the way he acts towards them. He’s still the same sweet, benevolent, older friend. He doesn’t tease them, like an older brother, nor does he treat them with disdain or disgust. Always that smile, always those gentle words.

Touya can’t believe he thinks of Yukito as “sweet.”

Sometimes Yukito comments on it to Touya, how cute Sakura is, how thoughtful Li-kun is. Touya always snorts and makes some derisive, irritated remark, and Yukito laughs at him.

Thankfully, Yukito is oblivious to the effect he has on Touya.

Touya can’t really explain it. Not even to himself. He doesn’t blush and stammer like the brat (thank goodness!), nor does he get all dreamy and melty like his sister. But there’s an effect. Something in between, maybe. A softening of his tone, a relaxed slump to his shoulders, a playful, continuous quirk at the corner of his lips. Sometimes, he thinks of it like the opening of a door. When Yukito is around, when Yukito smiles at him, it’s like he’s opening a door to Touya only he can see. Or maybe it’s a door that’s always there, he’s just the only one with a key.

Metaphors make Touya’s head hurt.

Anyone who’s known Touya long enough can see it anyway, though. Touya knows it, of course. He’s never had a best friend before. Not like Yukito. Not one that he lets ride on the back of his bicycle, arms wrapped around his waist or shoulders. Not one that he waits for after school, or one that waits for him so they can go home together. Not one that he eats lunch with every day. Not one that seems connected to his hip.

Not one that he spends as much time with as he does his family.

It’s gotten to the point where Touya thinks of Yukito like he does his father, or his sister. Yukito is there, a natural fixture in his life. Like he’s always been there, Touya thinks. He doesn’t question the reasons that Yukito is in his life, nor does he consider the possibility that one day Yukito won’t be there. That’s how fixed Yukito’s place in his life is.

Yukito slips into that place easily. He doesn’t seem to realize how strange it is for Touya to accept him like that. Unlike others, he doesn’t comment about how withdrawn and aloof Touya acts, how no one else is ever invited over to Touya’s house, how he’s the only one Touya invites along on jobs with him.

Yukito is oblivious to the special place he holds in Touya’s life.

Touya isn’t exactly inclined to clue him in, either. He thinks that’s why he likes Yukito so much.
