He’d never really understood Christmas cards. The kind you sent to your family-those made sense. But giving them out to classmates? That just seemed silly. It’s not like classmates were always going to be there, especially now, when they were all on the verge of graduating. Touya already knew that he wasn’t staying. With any luck, he would never need to see any of these people every day again. Maybe they were all trying to hold onto something… but he knew that you had to give things up, and that little pieces of stiff paper weren’t going to change anything.

But still. He was stopped in front of a rack of cards at the gift store, wasn’t he? Shopping for the monster inevitably landed him (fairly often) in stores of small, delicate, cute, and pink objects. This one just happened to have a large and interesting rack of Christmas cards. That weren’t all pink.

There was one in particular he kept looking at. It was blue-ish, which had initially caught his eye, but now the design was what he was really looking at. It was very simple, but very… appropriate. And a little stupid, but then, it was the season for that kind of thing.

Sighing in exasperation (he was already getting something ridiculous for his sister-AND her boyfriend, just to prove a point), he grabbed the card off the rack and stalked to the register.

At least it would be appreciated.

“Are you going to need the kitchen?” his father asked mildly at home. He’d just gotten home from shopping, and paused halfway up the stairs.

“No…?” The statement turned into a question, and he raised an eyebrow curiously.

“You’re not going to make any for Christmas?” His father’s smile was so innocent that it wasn’t.

“Well, I-“ he began.

“Sakura-chan is making candy this afternoon. Maybe you could help her. You might find a use for it too. I’m sure there’s someone you could give it to.”

“Yuki doesn’t-“

“But he likes candy, doesn’t he? And you got him a card already. It could use something else.”

Conceding defeat, Touya trudged back down the stairs.

“What kind of candy is the monster making?”

“Peppermint bark. All the ingredients are out. You actually might want to get started before Sakura-chan does, to make sure you have enough space. It’s very simple, really, and there are plenty of supplies, so feel free to make Tsukishiro-san a whole pan.”

“That’s how much he’d need,” Touya muttered under his breath, but he got started anyway.

-----

They were sitting on the couch together, feet propped on the table, watching some American movie on the television. They’d spent the morning at the Kinomoto house, exchanging gifts with his father and sister and the brat and trying to keep the plushie out of the pudding (though Touya was pretty sure Yukito slipped him his first bowl when he thought no one was looking). Touya’s father had eyed them curiously when neither of them gave the other a gift, but he trusted his son and his boyfriend.

Without a word (words would be awkward), Touya reached over the side of the couch, then plopped the large box of peppermint bark with the card on top in Yukito’s lap.

“For me?” he asked playfully, feigning surprise.

“Yeah…” He was pretty sure he was blushing, but it wasn’t like Yukito was going to say anything.

Eagerly but carefully, Yukito slid his finger along the sealed edge of the envelope and withdrew the card. He couldn’t help but laugh. On the front, two brown rabbits were building a “snowbunny.” Glitter snow dusted the forest scene. The inside was blank save for the generic “Happy Christmas”-Touya wasn’t good with words.

“It’s adorable, To-ya.”

“I figured you’d think so.” He smiled, a little proud of himself.

“Yue thinks so too.” Touya suspected that was something he wasn’t supposed to know. Yukito looked rather pleased with himself. He peeked into the box, withdrew a piece of peppermint bark, and nibbled an edge. “It’s good,” he complimented, offering the same piece to Touya.

As Touya took his own confection and munched, Yukito handed him an envelope and a gift bag.

Curiously, Touya opened the envelope. It was a generic Christmas card, and Yukito was already apologizing for not finding something as cute as what Touya had found him. Not that it really mattered, of course. Inside, Yukito had written “Merry Christmas To-ya!” in his neat handwriting. He was about to put it back in the envelope when he noticed Yukito gesturing discreetly. He opened the card again and noticed, in tiny script, in the bottom corner mostly covered by his thumb, “Merry Christmas.”

He grinned, and turned his attention to the bag. It, too, was nondescript. Inside were two candy canes.

“Hey, thanks Yuki…” he started, but Yukito interrupted him.

“Do you know what you get with two candy canes?” he asked, smiling impishly.

“Um… twice as much… sugar?”

Yukito laughed. “Well, that too.” He reached over and took the candy canes from Touya’s fingers. He turned one around, and put them against each other to form a heart. He smiled up at Touya. Not overly pleased with himself, just a simple smile that Touya loved.

“One for you, and one for me,” Yukito explained, handing him one and keeping the other for himself.

He could feel the corners of his mouth twitching, and it hurt a little in his chest. He leaned towards Yukito, pulling him around so their foreheads touched.

“I love you,” he whispered.

“I know,” Yukito agreed, tipping his head up to kiss Touya.

“You can have the rest of the candy canes, if you want. It’s in the pantry, top shelf.”
