Jesus christ. Whats the long term prognosis? Are you going to be ok? How long until the wound is healed?

Also how are your cats doing?

Long term, I should heal just fine. They found the bacteria that caused the infection but have no idea how I got it -- but don't seem to think I'll get it again. It's just one of those totally bizarre freak things that happen, I guess. They've been vague about how long the wound will take to heal -- straight answers are NOT their strong suit -- but I think a couple of weeks. I have a follow-up on Monday where I hope to learn more.

The cats are good -- Jason was around to kitty-sit while I was in the hospital. They're glad I'm home though; I'm pretty sure Gigi thought I was dead, since she spent most of the time I was gone under the bed and now keeps me in sight a lot of time. Django, the little ingrate, was fine as long as Jason took him outside.

Really glad to hear that overall everything should turn out alright.

Its even worse when a gigantic ball of suck has no end in sight.

Holy crap, that sounds horrific. I'm very glad the surgery worked, but hyeeeagh that's some horrific patient care in there. Hope your wound heals up soon.

Jeebus, K! How horrifying for you.

So, how does this open wound thing eventually heal? Will there just be a chunk of you missing? Why don't they stitch it up? I don't get it. And it sounds super awkward and painful for you.

It's super weird. Basically, you (meaning me) pack it with gauze to keep it from closing up, and let it heal from the bottom up. The idea is that while they cut out the dead tissue, they didn't necessarily cut out all the infected tissue (leaving live tissue to fight off the infection), and if they didn't want to seal it up and trap any infection in (at least, that's what they told me). Of course, it means that I need to keep an eye for further infection while it heals, and I think it's gonna take awhile to heal. But it will fill in, eventually. But I really don't dig the whole "hole in my belly" thing I've got going on right now - it's actually wearing me out more than I thought it would.
