Dressing for Rio had proven to be a mistake, but there had been an absolute promise of warmer temperatures, and it had been a long time since any kind of a vacation had presented itself to her. When Amy had been in her teenage years she had embarked on weekend-long road trips with a pair of girls from a few streets over. They had been a year her ( Read more... )

The Doctor was just about finished making adjustments on the console - he'd spent the whole time she was off in the wardrobe twisting levers and cranking knobs, calibrating the controls for their destination. Wanted to get this one exactly right. He owed it to her, even if she couldn't remember why.

His jacket had been tossed over the railing, his sleeves rolled up to the elbow. He looked Amy over as she arrived on the platform and gave a quick nod, an approval of her outfit.

"Space Florida," he answered, reaching onto the console to get back to his adjustments, which took him around the farther side of the console and back toward her. "Artificial planet in the star system Americanus. The most luxurious resort of the thirty-fifth century. In fact, the very first interstellar resort to be put up almost entirely by humans. They've got everything, absolutely everything. And the beach - the beach is the best. Automatic sand."

Now that sounded impressive. The equivalent of a five-star resort, somewhere out in space? It definitely sounded like a vacation, and Amy wasn't about to turn that down. It had been a very long time since any opportunity like this had come her way. The Doctor didn't strike her as the type to favor the beaches, but she wasn't about to raise that question just yet.

"Automatic sand?" Amy tugged the sunglasses from the top of her head down to the bridge of her nose, and the TARDIS was tinted in a darker shade where the lights weren't quite as bright. The toe of one boot caught on a gap in the metal grating and she nudged the glasses down further, looking over the tops of the frames to be able to see a bit better. No point in stumbling around in semidarkness.

"Luxury resorts I've heard of. But automatic sand?"

As he talked, he kept on working. "It's automated, totally. Cleans up the lolly sticks, the barbecue-soaked napkins, all the other usual beach debris. Sorts it all out, leaves the seaside completely pristine. It's like a miracle between your toes... Just don't drop any loose change. You'll never see it again."

Something inside the TARDIS console whirred, then buzzed, then dinged. ...There. Done. All it would take for them to get there was a pull of the main switch.

The Doctor popped back up to standing. "Almost ready," he said - then grabbed his jacket and headed off past Amy. Back in the direction she'd come from.

There was unabashed delight on her face, something that tended to show itself forth when he was around. The Doctor made dreams into reality, at least for her. Amy had wondered just what was out beyond the stars, and now he was showing her how far the reach could go. It was a dizzying, wonderful thing, being able to travel with him.

"Are we going to stay for awhile, then?" She followed him, continually used to having to keep up (don't wander off), her voice lifting a little in volume to be heard through the corridors. "I didn't know you were the vacationing type."

There isn't displeasure in her voice, either. Amy isn't in the least bit opposed to a vacation at the most luxurious resort in the galaxy.
