Hi, I'm late to the party, here after a suggestion from the lovely bearseatbeets23. Hope it's cool that I add you as a friend so that I may participate in the future?
Basically, I was going to say what bsquared41 said. (She's a smart gal.)
It boils down to religion, values, personal experience...
To give you an example, let's take a look at the Iraq war. If my cousin's husband Scott (Very conservative, a Gulf War vet and West Point grad) and myself (Pretty liberal and lost my friend Brandon to an IED while he was serving in 2004) were to discuss the war, it is likely that things would get heated. While our political beliefs pre-war were pretty much the same as they are today, our personal involvement in the issue is only going to heighten things. It's very likely we would let personal experience cloud our vision. To quote Tracy Jordan: "uh-oh, emoh-tions."
I'm going to be a little brief this time, since I feel like I showed up to the pub at 2:30 expecting a beer, but I'm looking forward to some great discussion! :)
Hi! Always happy to make a new friend, not to mention another person joining in the fun!
The example you gave is a good one (I'm so sorry about your friend). It's one thing for those who have no real proximity to the issue to have an opinion, but it's a whole other thing entirely when you've had first or even second hand experience.
Thanks again for participating! The next meeting is September 23rd, but feel free to stop by before then :)
