The Book Wars

Feb 03, 2010 10:21

I am on the outside of the book wars, and a writer, so my viewpoint is colored by how the debacle is affecting my future. That said, I do have opinions. I always do, even when I can see both sides. (I am, of course, open to new ideas, more info, and open debate!)

Long ago, books were hidebound for a reason - so they would last. But the makers of ( Read more... )

My personal complaint was with Amazon's playground tactics. They pulled the Buy buttons late on a Friday after New York had "closed" so that the mainstream media wouldn't get the story for two days, which was cowardly. They announced their action on a post buried in their Kindle forum, which was sneaky. And they keep telling the news they've capitulated, but the Buy buttons are not yet restored. Which is deceitful. It's very personal for me because I had no real dog in the ebook fight - my book is only available in print editions, but they pulled the Buy buttons anyway.

So Macmillan wants it's books to be more expensive than the other publishers? Fine. Let them set a higher price point, and see what the market will bear. If consumers refuse to pay it, Macmillan would be forced to reduce the price, That's just how retail works. I'm interested to see what happens now that Harper is getting into the fun.

:D

I personally refuse to buy an e-book reader until there is some industry standard across the board. I wouldn't buy a DVD player that only plays MGM DVDs or a CD player that will only play one brand of disc. I wouldn't buy a CD that could only be played in one particular brand of player, ditto on DVDs. So why in the world would I buy a reader that would only work with one brand of book or an e-book that would only play with all of its features on one brand of reader. The problem is Money Talks. Apparently enough people are buying at the moment. I'll probably be the only person in 50 years still reading paperbacks.

I do own a reader, but I did a lot of research first, and concluded that the Kindle is the worst possible choice for anyone to buy.. you're stuck buying from only one retailer, you get charged to upload your own files to the device, and it barely reads any formats.. I went with a Sony, which means while I can use their software to buy books from a specific retailer, I don't have to.. I can go and find a better price from a different online ebook seller if I want to. Much much better, and much more flexible regardless of how the market changes in the future..

Actually that is not true. You do not get charged to upload your own documents to the Kindle. You can transfer whatever you want to the Kindle from the computer. It is only if you want to email a document to your kindle that you are charged. I just choose to upload from my computer -- free of charge. :) Also, I buy from a variety of retailers, with a kindle you are locked in to certain formats (Kindle actual reads a large number of formats but it does not read ePub or ADE) and you can buy books from any retailer that sells in those formats. I routinely buy from various retailers and either have the book delivered electronically (no charge) or upload through my computer. What I cannot do is buy from B&N, Borders or Sony -- but I am okay with that. I buy from smaller publishers and smaller online vendors. The issue isn't back and white at all, but I just wanted to point out these inaccuracies.

Faith thank you for detailing the process, I had no idea that there were so many different stages to book publishing.
