I have actually heard from travel industry people that that bit about car rentals having sponsorship. I don't know if it's true or not, but they also claim that it has to do with the type of clientele each island is expected to bring in (or rather, what the clientele who would pick a particular island would think of themselves, since their personal image and reality don't always align...).
