It had been a long day at work, but Annie had been looking forward to going out after with her sister. With plans at home with Clay after, she'd made sure to be able to pick up his gift while she and Danielle were out.

"Clay?" She set her keys on the table nearest the door and shrugged out of her jacket. "Honey, I'm home."

Dinner was due to be delivered in an hour or so, the wine was being chilled as he spoke and Annie's flowers were on her nightstand. He had to be there when Annie opened her closet.

She found him in the bedroom, unchanged, and it took all of her self control not to reach for her pajamas like usual. The flowers caught her eye and she smiled big. "They're gorgeous."

Why they hadn't been downstairs was a mystery. "Are you okay?"

"Dinner should be here soon."
