This is wonderful. Enough humor to keep it (and me) from turning into mush, but so sad, with Charlie wishing he could see Aaron grow up and knowing it's not going to happen. It hurts seeing Charlie regretting he's not Aaron's "real" dad, when that's just what he is. As an adopted person, I can tell you that "real" parents and "genetically related" parents aren't necessarily the same. The Island processed the adoption papers for Charlie and now he is proving his love for his son by being willing to die to give his kid the best chance at the best life available. I am going to add a mental AU/future fic to this that Hurley or someone has used one of the digital cameras found in the luggage to document the beach camp, including a nice photo of Charlie holding Aaron, and the memory card will be found and printed out after rescue so Aaron will have a picture of this Charlie person people keep talking about.
Aww! Thanks so much for this comment (it's almost longer than the actual fic!). It's always nice to hear when your writing has struck a personal chord. I also sincerly hope that Aaron learns about Charlie someday. I hope after Claire gets rescued she goes to find Liam so he can tell her about the significance of the DS ring then Aaron can carry on Charlie's family legacy. He can also pick up all the Driveshaft mechandise!
