If you don't know England is the middle of a very wet apocalypse. I've just about survived a very rocky bus ride home and being hit in the head by flying debris in the gales. Let's see it I can get today's meme entry done before my house loses power.
February 12th: Talk about your favorite movies. Or just your favorite and what it means to you.
janie_tangerine I can never pick one favorite film. I'll force it down to a top five with some honorable mentions.
My Own Private Idaho. When I was sixteen I remember staying up to watch this film at midnight. It was the last film in a Gus Van Sant season on Filmfour (back when the Filmfour channel was solely focused on high quality independent cinema). How to describe this film? Road movie, rent boys and Shakespeare's Henry IV. And River Phoenix's most iconic performance. It's hypnotically beautiful.
Children of Men. I rewatched this film recently and cried not only because it's such an upsetting convincing future scenario. But also because it's so uniquely perfect and perfection in storytelling always makes me teary. It'd call Children of Men a naturalistic science fiction film. The setting, the characters and the pacing of the film all seem so real, sometimes feeling like a documentary. Love it.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. More Shakespeare! This time it's a retelling of Hamlet from the perspective of two minor characters who are killed for no real reason. They are just two hapless victims of the greater plot. Technically this is really my favorite play but I saw the film first and it's Gary Oldman and Tim Roth acting together for two hours; what more could you want?
Naked. This is by far the most depressing film I've ever seen and I can't watch it very often because I feel like killing myself every time I get to the end of it, but still - I think it's masterpiece. David Thewlis gives one of the best acting performances I've ever see in any film. His lead character Johnny is just a terrifying creation. He'll makes me hate myself, hate the world and believe everything he says is horribly true.
The Fisher King. I love most Terry Gilliam films but this is my favorite, a little urban fantasy gem. It's one of the few films that brings out the romantic in me. There are three very different "I love you" moments in this film and all of them make me cry.
Honorable mention: Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Withnail & I, The Truman Show, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Brick, River's Edge, WALL-E, Delicatessen and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
