La lettera C è la più soggetta al tradimento - cugino, cognato, e compare.
Mario wasn't sure what brought the saying to mind as he stared down at his sleeping lover. She'd rolled onto her stomach, the ruffled sheet displaying her bare back. He bent over and kissed her shoulder. She gave a muffled sound as she woke just slightly.
He ran a hand down her side.
The letter C is most likely to betray - cousin, brother-in-law, and godfather.
“What time is it?” she murmured.
“Early,” he whispered in reply. He pushed her red hair off her neck and kissed it.
Compare. Godfather.
His godfather, Fidele Viti, was dead. He had been for years. He was no longer a threat.
The woman rolled over and wrapped an arm around Mario's neck. She pulled his head down and caught his lips with hers for a deep kiss. He gripped her bare side with one hand while the other stroked her chest.
Cognato. Brother-in-law.
Another worry to dismiss. His brother-in-law was dead, and he doubted he'd have another one. Sophia had married to appease Pop, and she played the widow wonderfully, but no one doubted for a moment what had happened to her husband. Wealthy Italian men did not simply fall off their yachts in the middle of the ocean and disappear.
Mario tangled his hand in the woman's hair, twisting red locks around his fingers, admiring it in the pale light of dawn that managed to creep through the curtains. Her hair, her porcelain skin, her slender limbs... Everything about this woman was perfect.
Cugino. Cousin.
Johnny was dangerous. His father had been a good friend to Mario's father, but he didn't have the same loyalty. His mother was a shrew, and she wanted her son to have what rightfully belonged to her nephew. Mario would see to it that Johnny never got close to having Gotham.
“Mario,” his lover whispered, “what's wrong?” She stroked his face with one delicate hand.
Comare. Mistress.
“Nothing, comare mia. Nothing,” Mario whispered in reply. He bowed his head to kiss her again.
She was faithful to him. She had her lovers, of course, but no one else from the Family. No one else from any Family. She was loyal to the Falcones, would not betray them. She had her own life, he had his. But she would not betray him.
Charlotte.
