Tosh, Rape, and Why A Shitload of People Are Missing the Point Entirely

Jul 11, 2012 14:57

Okay, so there's been some controversy going around on the blogosphere lately about whether or not rape jokes can be/are funny, and this is in response to an incident where Daniel Tosh was making some rape jokes at a comedy club. I want to start right out by addressing the most important issue, which most people tend to skip in favor of jumping ( Read more... )

Right, because a woman who's uncomfortable about rape jokes is a "disruptive heckler." Suggesting someone be raped is "sarcasm", that must be OBVIOUS to everyone. Except no, clearly it isn't obvious, or this would never have been brought up. And it's even less obvious that the routine itself is some kind of satire, given Tosh's hamfisted style of just repeating the point over and over until it becomes more of a rant than a comedy routine.

And it's not nonsense to take any threat seriously. Especially not when it is extremely common for women to be raped. Recognize your privilege and examine your biases or gtfo.

Also, the whole "satire" line doesn't work in any case, and here is why: http://freethoughtblogs.com/nataliereed/2012/03/16/hipster-misogyny/

You know I was really worried at first that I was way off base with this, but it's really nice to be seeing vindication from some of the people I've been sharing this with. Thank you.

I really think your missing the point here. While Daniel in this case may not have specifically stated that Rape is bad, he shouldn't have to. In fact the whole idea that we as a culture Need to continually reinforce that obviously bad and morally wrong things are wrong is ludicrous! According to you we as a society now are able to be swayed on a deep moral and personal level by being able to joke about a subject? Really?! I for one am deeply insulted that you think human beings as a whole are, one so week of will, and two utterly dismayed that you honestly believe this nonsense! This is exactly the same line of thinking that violent video games make kids violent. If you are taught the difference between right and wrong and in fact do not have any psychological issues preventing your ability to tell right from wrong you should not be swayed by jokes about any subject good or bad.

I forgot my account details, but I saw Tae share this, and I really appreciate this issue brought. Hell, our own gaming communities are full of creepy assholes who consider this really sad attempt at humour to be funny. Thanks for the well worded article.
